I have a tattoo—“no formerly heroic times”—that refers to a passage from Dillard’s For the Time Being. It reminds to not valorize nostalgia, to not see yesterday as rosier than it was because today is bad. I don’t want a return, I want for us to advance toward justice, not a misremembered yesterday.

I hate having to figure out every time if someone is talking about American Black or Global Black. There's a lot in common, but there's a lot that's not. For example, my "grits" are yellow and coarser. Another example: we got free a little earlier and came to try to help. The nuances do matter.
