I’m the problem and not the guy(s) that just did the Nazi salute.

Thread.

W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.

Mama Mia. You a gotta be a kiddin me wid dis.

Many people are saying that they’ve never seen federal spending as tremendously efficient and not wasteful as it is today.

In 1860 three of the richest and most politically well-connected white men in Barbour County, AL were appointed generals in the Confederate army despite having no military experience. That worked out about as well as one could guess.

I love the idea that the ketamine and video game junky with 13 (known) kids who posts 200 times a day and who works for the golfer in chief is worried that *other people* aren’t working hard enough.

Seems bad

If the GOP wants to eliminate the Civil Rights Act of 1964, introduce a bill, put it up to a vote. Campaign on it. Say it, cowards. Stop hiding behind the illegal DOGE “DEI” chainsawing.

Jimmy Carter library abruptly cancels three upcoming book talks on civil rights history, homelessness, and climate change. It appears this is related to the new requirement to get approval from DC for all events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/a...

Elon Musk is the Mike Lindell of Trump 2.0. He’s an upgrade in terms of star power and wealth, but just as conspiracy-addled, overly online, and completely ignorant about how government or society functions.

WYOMING: “Thank you, Madam chairman.” “I prefer ‘Mister’ chairman.” “Well you all voted preferred pronouns cannot be compelled speech.”

Text from Elon Musk to Ashley St. Clair. "We have a legion of kids to make."

Doing this right before firing three top military leaders is so deranged. Source at DoD told me, “Disdain for Hegseth is a near-universal feeling even among the Trumpiest in the office.“

hey look our FBI Director as of 6 hours ago

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

For no reason, just remembering back to January 15, 2021 when Trump and his pals were talking about declaring Martial Law to try to stay in power. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021...

A pundit tried to argue with @jamellebouie.net just yesterday that Trump isn’t trying to resegregate the bureaucracy. But this stuff would make Woodrow Wilson proud.

today in breaking laws no matter how obscure, ladies and gentlemen, the Goldwater-Nichols Act

Replacing the military brass and attorneys with three-star generals you pluck from retirement is exactly what a dictator looking to use an army to do some violence does.

Found myself thinking today about this Twitter thread I wrote up in 2018 meditating on the possibility that the party of Lincoln & Douglass, the party that saved the union & refounded it on the principle of equality, might end up replacing the Constitution with white nationalist authoritarianism.

It's so weird how the party that likes to claim their opponents are radical Maoists or Stalinists are engaging in purges of the military, the Justice Department, & dozens of other federal agencies at a scale that is far far far beyond anything any incoming administration in US history has ever done.

I feel like if I wanted people to think I wasn't racist, I wouldn't fire an extremely qualified and distinguished Black military leader.

And we got finger-wagged by a New England journo "expert" for not staying in our lane and sticking to our knitting (his words) and leaving hard stuff to (paywalled) NYT and Wapo. So we were right, and we did the right thing, and we didn't need anyone's permission to make our own news decisions.

If your member of Congress isn’t doing at least this - and mine isn’t - this is something they can and should be doing.

Things hurting the US economy: -mass layoffs of federal workers -funding cuts to every federal dept -corporate layoffs -measles and tuberculosis outbreaks -high flu rates -$8/dozen eggs -new tariffs raising the cost of everything -Canada boycotts US travel and goods -concerns about airplane safety

The writers room has really outdone itself this time.

another thing every other president in history would be impeached for just happened
