It feels like the NHL/NBA playoffs this year generally have been off the charts riveting and intense.

Not a Day 3 Big Board ranking you see every year:

Some NFL Draft prospects have ‘character concerns.’ But what are those—and how do analysts talk about them? It is a fascinating dynamic, where there's a line you don't want to cross, but it's a different line for people who cover the draft: www.nytimes.com/athletic/630...

Bill Belichick is the rare coaching legend who wrote a book neither after winning a championship nor after retirement, but after he was fired—and was unsure of where he’d land. My story on how that hovers over his book, and what he stands for. www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/...

AMERICAN KINGS, a varied and thorough look at what it means to be a quarterback, will be out 9/9. Waterfield, Elway, Unitas, Caleb Williams, Moon, Manning (and Manning, Manning and Manning), Steve Young, Colin Hurley, Shack Harris, Vanita Krouch, and more! www.amazon.com/American-Kin...

There’s an old story that one of Wayne Gretzky’s buddies was introducing him at an event and didn’t know what exactly to say. How do you introduce an icon? He asked Wayne, who said with a laugh, “Just say ‘the most, the most and the most.’” Now it’s “The most and the most.”

Looking forward to diving into this!

Hey @PFWAwriters: It’s time for Michael Silver to win the Bill Nunn Award. Who else has been on Elway’s balcony post-SB and banned from the Raiders, to just scratch the surface? Mike has brought it — in print, online, and on air — for three-plus decades. It’s time. #duuuuuddee

My buddies Steve and Shawn wrote this podcast. Back to Back to the Future is clever and hilarious. Give a listen! static1.squarespace.com/static/67ca190…

Seth wrote it? I'm gonna read it. can't wait for this!

I don’t endorse much, but @sethwickersham.bsky.social is an extremely gifted writer, reporter and frankly, just an awesome guy. You should buy his book - especially if you like the NFL.

For Seeth Wickerssham!!!

Congrats to Rick Telander on 30 years columnizing in Chicago. I love his introductory column, getting at the strange world of being a national writer with a local heart. “It was always Chicago or nothing.” Always.

Nearly broke my thumb pre-ordering this bad boy. I've watched @sethwickersham.bsky.social throughout the process, and there's just no one who knows the American quarterback (and therefore America and sports and power) like he does. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/789617...

Not me!

I didn’t know John Feinstein. Those I know who did know him complimented his generosity and rolled their eyes at his crankiness. But it’s indisputable that he shifted the paradigm. To say that a book was Feinsteinian was a huge compliment. RIP.

My next book, American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback, will hit bookstores 9/9/25. I spoke to @ESPNFrontRow about it. Please preorder now for yourself and 500 of your closest friends. Thank you! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/789617... www.espnfrontrow.com/2024/12/new-...

Ovechkin closing in reminds me of Gary Thorne at his absolute best. Wayne Gretzky scores 802nd Goal youtu.be/yjIrvVOlzOk?si… via @YouTube

Around the Horn has had an amazing run. Hard to imagine a show that elevated the profiles of sportswriters more ... the roster of current and former panelists is staggering.

Worth it.

When Jordan played for Washington, a great writer named Michael Leahy wrote a series of unflinching stories for the WashPost that culminated in this book. One of the best reads ever on a fading icon. I feel like it’s been forgotten a bit, so wanted to remind folks.

It’s been a busy week but make time for @anthonyolivieri.bsky.social’s deep dive straight into Jonathan Martin’s tortured, evolving soul. www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/...

. @anthonyolivieri.bsky.social with your read of the day, on Jonathan Martin: t.co/jH4RYUpYL2

Weird and maybe scary to consider but in many ways Hurts played better two years ago vs KC. He had to match Mahomes dagger for dagger then and he generally did.

What was fascinating is that Fangio and Co seemed to know Mahomes’s first read on almost every play — then the rush got to him. You’re talking about finding tendencies and the highest level of coaching against the highest level of coaching.

Pat Summerall voice: “There will be no three peat.”

You knew Fangio would bring it, because this is a career defining game for him. It’s too bad a coordinator can’t win mvp.

Twenty minutes left and the Chiefs have two first downs.

Today is Super Bowl XXIV for me. Favorite host: Detroit. Cool city, easily walkable, stadium right there. It’s cold. So what? Bring the game back to Motown.

Eagles, 17-14 (ducks!)

As Kansas City nears a Super Bowl three-peat, many NFL fans have grown tired of their dominance. But however much America has turned on the Chiefs, it’s nothing like the second half of the Patriots dynasty, say five people who covered both teams. gofos.co/3Qgo0ON

A little shorty over at the podcast YouTube page. Cool ideas in the hopper for the YouTubes and the CNF Pod Expanded Universe. This, a wonderful riff by @sethwickersham.bsky.social, author of the forthcoming biography of the quarterback "American Kings." [pre order link below.]

A year ago now, the Eagles were discussing whether to hire Bill Belichick. Now they’re Super Bowl bound for the third time in eight years.
