Edinburgh uni is entirely to blame for me having a career in HE. In spite of that I am heartbroken to see the vandalism that is being proposed here.

This new paper is available open access in 'Limnology and Oceanography'. It was written by @qmul.ac.uk's @nanwu1112.bsky.social, @sgrieve.bsky.social and @profkatespencer.bsky.social and our Andrew Manning. aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Next week we are hosting two talks to celebrate International Geomorphology week. Dr Lynda Yorke will discuss inclusive fieldwork in the geosciences on Wednesday. On Friday, Gwyn Nelson from the Wales Coastal Monitoring Centre will present a national approach to communicating coastal change.

I’m glad Labour is supporting these workers, who are at risk of losing 400 jobs. Would be nice if they were also supporting university workers, where 10,000 jobs are at risk. In the first week of February alone 1,000 job cuts were announced. Nothing from Labour at all in response.

Finally released Spherely 0.1.0! If you are using Shapely with latitude / longitude data, you might want to try Spherely instead. It provides similar API but relies on spherical geometry (via S2Geometry). 🧵

Come join us at @rbgkew.bsky.social for a *paid* summer internship. You will be estimating the aboveground biomass 🌳🌳🌳 at the beautiful Wakehurst. careers.kew.org/vacancy/summ...

The technicians at Queen Mary have been invaluable during my PhD. From sourcing kit, to assisting in the field and the labs, to providing help and insight I probably wouldn't have received otherwise. It's fair to say I owe a lot to the Geography technicians. Pay them more and provide more support.

Does anyone have experience of their institution offering PhD study at FTE fractions other than 1.0 and 0.5? I'm curious to know if our situation is typical or needlessly restrictive. #AcademicChatter

This is a good starter pack with all the fellow Software Sustainability Institute Fellows. Good to see you all again!

Our department away day last year was held on campus to save money. Good to know our leaders are making the same tough decisions

Take a look at our recent #outreach blog post to find out more about Alex the crabs adventures in a salt marsh, learning all about the #ecogeomorphology of wetlands! Funded by our BSG outreach grant! www.geomorphology.org.uk/2025/02/10/s... @hywelgriffiths.bsky.social @sgrieve.bsky.social

If you want to know how the semester is going: I was just in the field kit storeroom and as I was leaving I turned off the light. As I stood in the complete darkness, I contemplated just closing my eyes and having a sleep while standing up.

I very much enjoy the nationwide government cuts to PhD funding being presented as a Cambridge problem. I just hope the plucky institution with its £2.6 billion endowment is able to cope. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Buoyant #microplastics reach deep ocean sediments through multiple cycles of aggregation and disaggregation. Great #phd output from @nanwu1112.bsky.social #floc #marinesnow #oceanplastic @sgrieve.bsky.social doi.org/10.1002/lno....

Exciting news! We’re thrilled to announce that tapir Yuna gave birth to a rare and endangered Malayan tapir calf Sunday night. The newborn, covered in distinctive white spots and stripes resembling a fuzzy walking watermelon, is only the second tapir born in our 120-year history.

Ever wondered how buoyant microplastic particles can reach deep ocean sediments? This new paper from @nanwu1112.bsky.social, @profkatespencer.bsky.social, Andy Manning and me solves that mystery! doi.org/10.1002/lno....

Great couple of days thinking about roughness and geomorphology. Thanks everyone for being so enthusiastic, @geogdurham.bsky.social for funding and @houseago.bsky.social for organising.

If 10,000 jobs were being cut in manufacturing, we'd have non stop questions in parliament and campaigns to get the government to step in and guarantee jobs that are critical for local economies.

Every single one of these book adverts disguised as "articles" is like "I got Mental Health earning a 7-figure salary in PR for the the kitten strangling factory, until I gave it all up to become an organic yoghurt weaver in the stables of my 7-bedroom Grade II* listed home in Frotting-on-Severn".

Bloody everything is AI these days

Remember when the literal reincarnation of Stalin, Jeremy Corbyn, proposed something similar in 2019? Thank god we dodged that bullet, eh?

When I read the newspapers they always talk about fishing, so I assume that the majority of the UK's economy is fishing related and only a tiny fraction relies on the creative arts, so this is probably absolutely fine.

Get your entries in folks! And if you're not in the UK, we have just introduced reduced membership fees for international members!

"they have to be lucky every time they go out and commit this offence, we only have to get lucky once" That'll be the police paraphrasing the IRA then. www.bbc.com/news/article...

I don’t know why that’s worrying. That’s well over half.
