Some of the most shameful comments uttered by a president in my lifetime. Trump is siding with the aggressor, blaming the victim. In the Kremlin they must be jumping for joy. I’d like to hope Republicans, who used to believe in resisting tyranny, would disavow the things Trump is saying & doing.

All my life I have studied democratization and autocratization. My 1st field trip was to newly democratic Argentina. I then added autocracies to my portfolio: Cuba, Ven, etc. I think I can recognize the stages of transition to authoritarianism. Here are the boxes Trump has already checked off.

Vance was right on just one thing: Europe lacks a clear positive vision of what it wants to defend. The answer must be "the things Vance rejects": truth, science, liberal democracy, rule of law, resisting dictators, climate action. It will have to do that without, & sometimes against, the US Govt.
