Nice to see "the fascists didn't even really make the trains run on time" finally going mainstream. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Yall wanna hear something extremely embarrassing? Before Trump’s election, a bunch of academics who lumbered rightward after being criticized by the left (Pinker, Dawkins, Krauss) wrote essays for a book that is coming out in July about the threats to academia from the left. YALL, THE TITLE!!

Planners should stop trying to reinvent the wheel with these missing middle ordinances and instead (a) identify the existing missing middle typologies that exist in the community and (b) legalize it. Too often, these ordinances micromanage design, or fantasize about non-existent typologies.

The people described here seem to have no agency or responsibility. Everything just happens to them, and their disinterest in adapting means it's someone else's fault. Living the same life as your grandparents hasn't been the norm since like the 1700s.

This is like parody. Hard to believe planners could be this out of touch. (I know, I know.)

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

The fact that this list includes (1) neighborhood associations from white, wealthy, exclusionary areas and (2) professionally managed nonprofits that claim to represent the interests of low-income renters tells you a lot about California housing politics.

This is an official White House tweet. It expresses utter contempt for the US Supreme Court. It expresses utter contempt for the First, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the US Constitution. It is indicative of an alarming degree of emotional immaturity among people in positions of public trust.

If the Fed capitulates to Trump (I don't think they will, nor should they) a cut in the Federal funds rate would ironically increase mortgage rates. This is because a cut would signal to markets that Fed independence is over, and hyperinflation is next.

During his first term, Trump's homelessness czar described his priority as "Housing Fourth" — well below treatment. In his second term, with funding and staff for both housing and treatment being cut, it's looking more like "Housing Zero"

New research by @marcelemoran.bsky.social: NYC's 10 worst speeders averaged >300 tickets *each* in 2024. 2 questions: 🔹 Why hasn't NY taken away their licenses? 🔹 Why are they still allowed to own cars (esp w/o Intelligent Speed Assist that prevents reckless speeding)? www.amny.com/news/where-d...

NEW: i spoke with several young AmeriCorps volunteers around the country who were abruptly pulled off projects building homes, readying forests for wildfire season, and working at food banks Tuesday afternoon. they are now on their way home thanks to DOGE cuts —

Old enough to remember when the GOP thought the biggest scandal in the world was the Obama admin's IRS reviewing the tax exempt status of some right leaning non-profits.

Trump’s sputtering response to Harvard standing up to him is yet another reason why institutions should refuse to bend the knee. He’s a paper tiger, unable to argue his own case.

Yes, the famously private freeway system and the famously private airport systems

I just landed in San Salvador a little while ago, and I look forward to meeting with the team at the U.S. embassy to discuss the release of Mr. Abrego Garcia. I also hope to meet with Salvadoran officials and with Kilmar himself. He was illegally abducted and needs to come home.

Last week on the UCLA Housing Voice Podcast we talked to @redbaaron.bsky.social about the Lewis Center's approach to evaluating a citywide zoning reform proposal in Los Angeles, with plenty of lessons for other cities. Stay tuned for part 2 next week! www.lewis.ucla.edu/2025/04/09/8...

There’s just so much shady shit in this story, but this really sticks out. Folks in NLRB’s IT unit were so freaked out by what they saw DOGE doing that they wanted to notify the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Then this happened:

The owners of surface parking lots in otherwise lively downtowns are often land speculators who have little interest in improving the property—their taxes are low and they can just sit on it. Bad neighbors. MN legislature should legalize Land Value Tax so cities can put the screws to these owners.

If Trump & Co. thought that a trade war would be limited to tariffs, they were, perhaps, mildly wrong. www.reuters.com/business/aer...

🚗💨 EVs are holding up better than combustion cars, says ADAC. In 2024, ICE cars aged 2–4 years were 2.5x more likely to break down than EVs. EVs on the road ↑ 97% EV breakdowns ↑ only 46%

Some stats from 100 days in on congestion pricing: - Complaints about car-honking are down 70% - The Holland Tunnel has 65% fewer delays at rush hour; time to get thru it is down 48% - 6 million fewer cars - Half as many traffic-related injuries - 1.5 million more visitors to BIDs year over year

This picture may haunt me to the end of my days. It is an ICE agent taking an axe to the car window of an immigrant in New Bedford, MA. Not far from where I sit now. An immigrant with no criminal record was abducted by this smiling man. An axe taken to a car window and to our democracy. 1/ #MomSky

"Human trafficking" now? That's a new one. The longer they leave Kílmar Ábrego García to rot in the CECOT, the longer his fake rap sheet gets. He has one arrest, for loitering. But within a week or two they'll be saying he's the Zodiac Killer.

The Washington Senate just approved HB 1596, which will require drivers convicted of reckless driving or excessive speeding to install an automatic speed governor as part of their probationary driver's license. The vote was 40-8. www.theurbanist.org/2025/04/14/o...

I don't really have anything especially profound to say, but yeah man this is it. They won't obey even the most milquetoast SCOTUS orders and are talking about sending US citizens to foreign gulags. It's happened here.

Today the @uclalewiscenter.bsky.social published our analysis on Measure ULA's effect on multifamily housing production in Los Angeles — a report that has been more than a year in the making for me and my coauthor Jason Ward at RAND. A thread on our findings below. www.lewis.ucla.edu/research/tax...

I'm so used to bar bathrooms with cutesy signs that I had to stop here and ask myself if I was a Mario or a Wario

If the government can pay a foreign state to imprison you and, in so doing, remove you from the protection of US law, the Constitution is worthless.

Even more respect to Bernie for knowing that the festival crowd is not gonna be down for more than a 4-minute political speech

We will #ScrubNothing

missed this when it happened at the start of the month but it sounds like as of april 2nd the oregon building codes division has voted to permanently adopt a rule to let stacked fourplexes use cheaper residential building code rules, rather than regulating them like full sized apartment buildings

3 days ago RFK Jr. told the CDC to stop recommending water fluoridation, claiming it was a neurotoxin (this is a lie). Turns out he also just eliminated the CDC’s entire Lead Program, and now lead poisoned children in Milwaukee are just on their own. Lead IS a neurotoxin and harms brain development

It's also worth considering why this dickish bicyclists don't seem to be much of a problem in places like Amsterdam. The reason, if my experience is any guide, is that bicycling defensively in places that are hostile to bikes (basically 100% of the US) requires frequently breaking traffic laws.

Homeland Security agents showed up at two elementary schools in my district asking for 6 different students. They lied and said they had permission from guardians to see them. Thankfully, both principals denied them access. These actions are disgusting and shameful.

Canadian land border crossings, split by same-day vs overnight trips. And contrasted with the change in US residents crossing the border. Same-day trips by Canadians are down 36% year over year, Overnight is down by 26% for a total of 680k fewer Canadians crossing the border this March.
