I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

Professor who teaches African American studies here. If your school eliminates or bans it, I will personally host free zoom sessions, provide resources, or answer questions for students, parents/guardians, or teachers who are interested in learning or discussing African American studies.

💥New: Donald Trump's early actions have focused on education & knowledge production. @philipncohen.com argues beyond their short-term implications, these measures represent a concerted effort to undermine scientific enquiry across all fields of research. #AcademicSky #SocialScience #HigherEducation

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI. I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

Somebody needs to channel Audre Lorde and explain to the institutional leaders of higher education that their silence will not protect us. We need to be 10 toes down and LOUD about celebrating and explaining the value of education, the importance of free inquiry, the life saving impact of research..

There's a new invite from @ruthbraunstein.bsky.social to submit to @sssreligion.bsky.social's 2025 Annual Meeting in your email inboxes. I'm the program chair this year! Wanted to highlight one key quote for #socsky people here interested in religion - we want your cool ideas!

A nice thing... Ethnic and Racial Studies is giving free access to my article with Olivia Hu and Xiang Lu for the next three months. It was shortlisted for the Martin Bulmer Prize for Article of the Year. Now you too can enjoy it for one low price: free! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

Today, we lost Michael Burawoy to vehicular violence. His work has been such an inspiration to qualitative sociologists (and many others). He will be very sorely missed. Fuck cars.

Done teaching for the day and now I’m preparing to read for the rest of the afternoon!! 📖 So excited to be at the page proofs stage of this project (co-authored with Simone Durham & @drjonessoc.bsky.social)! #BlackLivesMatter #AcademicSky #SocAF Pre-Order: www.bloomsbury.com/us/black-liv...

In today's race and ethnicity seminar, we have a nice set of theory articles. We start with this Eduardo Bonilla-Silva piece on systemic racism. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... 1/3

I'm currently on day two of a workshop from the NIH. We're in the middle of a presentation and we're now being told that the remainder of the workshop is cancelled. 🙃

open.substack.com/pub/theremix... Wrote a something this morning.

My department colleague @ebharrington.bsky.social was on The Daily Show last night discussing “Broligarchs,” wealth inequality, and yesterday’s inauguration with Jon Stewart! Check it out! 👇🏾👇🏾 #AcademicSky #Sociology www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvCm...

"To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious, is to be in a rage almost all the time."

I would caution people to stop relying on the Constitution as written to have any meaning other than what the people Trump put on the Supreme Court says it means. "He can't do that" is not a useful response to the things he's going to do. The correct response is "Will the Court uphold that?"

Happy Founders’ Day to all of my FINER Sorors of Z Phi B!!! 💙💙 #105YearZofFiner #ZetaPhiBeta #ZPhiB105

A better world is possible pass it on

fascinated by a rhetorical strategy i see all the time now, which is making up an extreme edge case to argue against doing anything for the public good, and doing this from the putative left.

"what are you working on today" ...

Mutual aid, sanctuary spaces, sharing pantries, freedom schools, reading collectives, childcare collectives, shared gardens. Just a few ideas of how we keep us safe. We don’t have to give up. But we need to commune. Peace in the struggle. Joy in the fight.
