Nothing has given me more consolation in these unworlding times than Maya Angelou's poem "A Brave and Startling Truth," which flew to space to hold up cosmic mirror to the best in us and the worst in us and the possible in us

This is so sad. Michael Burawoy was one of the most impactful sociologists of the past half century. He worked in and studied industrial workplaces and the oppression and struggle of those working.

I can’t believe one of the most impactful sociologists of our time was taken away in an instant by some idiot driver racing through a pedestrian intersection. I hate 2025 so much. Rest in peace, Michael Burawoy. www.mercurynews.com/2025/02/04/o...

How do autocrats stay in power? Our new research dives into the strategies of political control—repression, co-optation, and indoctrination—used across 229 autocracies from 1946 to 2010. What we found will change the way you think about authoritarian resilience. 🧵👇

Despite patriarchy's persistence, growing numbers of men believe they have it worse off than women. And, new research shows this "male victimhood" ideology is most common among men who aren't facing hardship. No, they're not caught between anything. Stop it. The fact that AI may be used or useful in future jobs does not create a single dilemma at all for college students in how to actually complete their coursework. 1/ Does climate activism work? The short answer is yes, and there's been lots of research this year showing how Here are some highlights 🧵

We tend to think of anti-vaxxers as affluent, White, crunchy granola-type moms. But that stereotype ignores how precarity creates vulnerability to anti-vaxx messaging. Take Tara, whose daughter had a sudden shift in temperament not long after a routine vaccine. 🧵1/ open.substack.com/pub/jesscala...
