Literal genocide.

This will sound weird but love yourself enough to write your own term papers.

Senior UNRWA emergency officer on the genocidal conditions imposed on Gaza rn: “The situation now is so beyond imagination, so beyond words at this point, because people are being starved, basically… children are now starving. People are surviving on one meal a day. People are without medicine.”

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

If you don't want your kids and grandkids to ask you how you allowed an entire people to be forcibly starved to death live streamed in front of your eyes, you have to do something now. Anything. Not just Americans. Everybody everywhere around the world.

Thanks to my friend Harriet for pointing out that the women went to Christ's tomb and saw he was not there, the angels showed up to describe what happened, & the women then told the apostles, who dismissed them. A Biblical account of women not being believed.

50th! Feels like we should have it a party.

“Public sociology is a form of education: speaking out beyond the university also performs an educative function.” Just before he died, Michael Burawoy talked to @michaelacbenson.bsky.social about his career-defining evangelism for public – or, alternatively, a living – sociology. buff.ly/6WD2fzQ

Hey, just a quiet reminder: it’s not true that people get more conservative as they age. *Populations* get more conservative as they age because poor and marginalized people die sooner. nymag.com/intelligence...

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made. -FS Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, published 4/10/1925.

Opinion: “In Australia politics and society tend to shun the extremes. We don’t believe in miracles and we don’t believe in devils. We believe in a fair go.” Australia must avoid a US-style culture war over EDI, writes Merlin Crossley #highered #EduSky

DEALING WITH INSECURE REASONERS: 🧵 1/ When people feel insecure about their beliefs or identity, they’ll often rely on fallacies like ad hominem, strawman arguments, or appeal to emotion to protect themselves from uncomfortable truths.

1. One of capitalism’s greatest successes is to shut down our imaginations. With the help of its favoured tools - neoliberalism and fascism - it persuades us that “there is no alternative”. Our first task is to re-ignite our moral imaginations and name our alternatives. 🧵

Really excited to see this volume coming out! It has been a long time in the making and brings together excellent contributors, check it out:

Columbia Journalism Review tested eight generative AI search tools and found their answers were wrong 60% of the time, and the paid ones actually fared worse than the free ones. Meanwhile, millions of people trust the way they present total bullshit with confident language.

Important and courageous leadership defending academic freedom in this column by my colleague @lanatatour.bsky.social who with Geoffrey Levey and A. Dirk Moses shows how to have frank and fearless discussion without having to agree with each other’s positions.

“After 20 years working on inequality, I can confidently say that class - indeed class war - has never been more evident in my lifetime” – @faizashaheen.bsky.social in our latest blog post #LSEInequalitiesBlog

The wages of the richest 1% have skyrocketed 182% since 1979.  Meanwhile, the wages of the bottom 90% have seen just 44% growth.  Trickle down economics was always a hoax.

Also important, the tactic of weaponizing civil rights against equality movements is identical: "protecting" Jewish people requires punishing pro-Palestine "protecting" women requires eliminating trans "protecting" white + Asian students requires eliminating Black and Latin affirmative action

Nothing has given me more consolation in these unworlding times than Maya Angelou's poem "A Brave and Startling Truth," which flew to space to hold up cosmic mirror to the best in us and the worst in us and the possible in us

This is so sad. Michael Burawoy was one of the most impactful sociologists of the past half century. He worked in and studied industrial workplaces and the oppression and struggle of those working.

I can’t believe one of the most impactful sociologists of our time was taken away in an instant by some idiot driver racing through a pedestrian intersection. I hate 2025 so much. Rest in peace, Michael Burawoy. www.mercurynews.com/2025/02/04/o...
