"Choice can only be exercised when options exist that enable equitable access to comprehensive care." On the cover, a Comment explores assisted dying, complex systems, and global equity in palliative care. Read this & more ➡️ tinyurl.com/42n97mp4

I welcome the Palliative Care Commission, with some fabulous commissioners. But where is the nursing voice? Of 21 commissioners why 10 medical doctors and only 1 person with a nursing background? #hpm #hapc #nursing @alisonleary1.bsky.social palliativecarecommission.uk/commissioners

This is a really useful resource for anyone who still needs convincing that immigration is not the reason they can't get a training number. An IMG applying to CT1 in my specialty has a 1 in 45 chance of receiving an offer, compared to roughly 1 in 3 for UK grads. medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-trai...

Our founder will be discussing 'Artificial Intelligence and Ethical challenges in Palliative Care' with @amaranwosu.bsky.social at @hospiceuk.bsky.social's Technology Leaders Conference. blog.mywishes.co.uk/hospice-uk-t... We look forward to it and hope to see you there. #Hospice #Ai #HealthTech

Massive shout out to the hospital pharmacy teams who worked their buts off to get people home from hospital today

If other medical specialities were stigmatized like palliative care #hapc #palliativecare

This is good news for hospices, which are under unprecedented financial pressure. But… It’s not a long term solution for hospices. And much palliative and end of life care is delivered outside of the hospice sector. So this is v welcome. But does not ‘fix’ palliative care.

We’re taking a short break over Christmas and the New Year. Thank you to everyone who has supported us and who joined the No Barriers Here movement this year. See you in 2025! 🎉

Preferred Place of Death A flawed concept used to perpetuate a misunderstood narrative?

Facilitators of high quality out-of-hours care include: a palliative care specific single point of access for patients; formal structures to integrate generalist/specialist services; and timely/skilled management of symptoms journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.... #hapc #PalliativeCare #hpm /1

A conversation today about 'comfort' ... so much more than freedom from pain.

We have to be critical towards our own #palliativecare paradigms! The evidence for #opioids for breathlessness in #heartfailure is questionable. A recent review states that „it may only be the very last option if other options have failed or in case of an emergency.“ heart.bmj.com/content/109/...

BBC news tells me ‘an urgent training programme is needed’ You can’t ‘eLearning’ your way out of misogynistic culture. I hope that’s clear, before someone wastes a lot of money ⚕️ amp.theguardian.com/society/2024...

First bluesky post! My new editorial with Catherine Evans and @proflizsampson.bsky.social calls out the misuse of 'person-centred care' in policy and outcome measurement as vague and oversimplified, especially for those with dementia. Here's a 25min video about #SpacesForListening vimeo.com/1033441520?s... Thanks to @susanresurgence.bsky.social for a lovely conversation with @brigidrussell51 & me. And thanks to all you wonderful souls who have come to #SpacesForListening over the last 4 years. The fire's still burning bright.

Great to see such interest in management of breathlessness at this morning’s NIHR National ARC PEoLC webinar & interest and n our unpaid carer resource supporting-breathlessness.org.uk/@arceastofen... @nihrarcs.bsky.social

@tuffrey-wijne.com Hello Irene are you aware of any easy read resources for breathlessness management?

A free online breathlessness resource is available for all NHS staff! Congratulations to all the team who developed it: Dr Anna Spathis, Sarah Kearney, Dr Matthew Maddocks, Prof Morag Farquhar, Dr Charles Reilly, Dr Ann Hutchinson and Dr Flavia Swan learninghub.nhs.uk/Catalogue/ch... #WorldCOPDDay

Definition of a woman of ‘a certain age’: - Too old to be bullied & intimidated. - Too young to be patronised & ignored. Terrifying to men of a certain type.

Also, your "agitated" patient. Are they delirious due to infection, or are they in pain and unable to communicate it clearly? Give simple analgesia if they haven't had any before running to sedatives. Analgesia FIRST. Always. #MedSky

How do we enhance public understanding of #OrdinaryDying? #PalliativeCare peeps, will you be at Palliative Care Congress 2025? Who has ideas & experience about public engagement? Suggest wise voices & effective campaigns from around the globe - there's lots to learn if we listen to each other.

Around 600,000 people who die in the UK each year could benefit from palliative care. Palliative care needs to be state funded, as it is now in the Republic of Ireland. @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social bmcpalliatcare.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.... (See estimates of need - Tables 3+4)
