I've been waiting for more UK research and professional orgs speaking put about what's going on in the US in their field. Well done to CILIP for being one of the first that I've seen. US information practices have global impacts.

Excellent news about Barbara Pym's English Heritage blue plaque at her London home. Best known as a novelist but also worked as an indexer; included an indexer in No Fond Return of Love. More about Pym's indexing career via @indexer.bsky.social (https://buff.ly/40ZospS)

This #ApprenticeshipWeek, Claire Laybats, #CILIP's Professional Services Development Manager reflects on four years of apprenticeship assessment at CILIP Pathways, and analyses how apprenticeships have impacted the sector. #SkillsForLife #NAW2025 www.cilip.org.uk/news/692959/...

1000% this. Public libraries are actually pretty radical--free to all, and based on the idea that info should be available to all. Get a library card! Use your library! Those numbers often play into their funding.

In a world that’s quite frankly batshit, the kids have it. 'Kindness' has been chosen as the Children's Word of the Year following a survey by Oxford University Press of more than 6,000 children across the UK. #OxfordWOTY www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Libraries & librarians play a huge role in countering disadvantage. They’ve offered story reading & rhyme times since, well, forever. As well as warm spaces, free access to books (not everyone can buy) & digital access. So don’t forget them. They’re part of the solution. #LibrariesChangeLives

Couldn’t agree more with @frankcottrellboyce.bsky.social on this. Let’s invest in libraries for children this year, as we mark the 175th anniversary of the Public Libraries Act. #Librarieschangelives www.theguardian.com/books/2025/j...

Happy PLR Day to everyone who celebrates! And readers, remember that not only do libraries give you access to a wide selection of books for free, the Government also pays authors a small sum for every time one of their books is borrowed from a public library... #ThisWritingLife

I want to remind Londoners that our city is—and always will be—a place for everyone. We’ll continue to celebrate London as the diverse, open and welcoming city it is.

After my councillor surgery at @Sidingscc this morning, I caught up with the fab @CamdenCouncil mobile health team. 🚐 They’re running free health checks, and vaccines for flu & COVID. 💉❤️🩺 Finishing soon at Sidings but out soon in: -Fitzrovia 22nd Jan -Swiss Cott 27th -Highgate 28th -Belsize 29th

Time has been the best present this Christmas. Knitted a hat and read a full book (without having to flip back and forth to see who was who and what was what). #TheProofOfMyInnocence - raging and rollicking, roistering and thoroughly recommended! Onwards to 2025!

As the sanitisation of Reform continues at pace, just remember that in Summer 2024 its leaders chose to fan hatred and conspiracies whilst white nationalist thugs ripped apart neighbourhoods and tried to murder families seeking asylum. www.politico.eu/article/nige...

I have TOO many books and yet I DON’T have ENOUGH books

The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill set out some initial steps that will help bring down the cost of going to school – and these are welcome. Free breakfast provision and limitations on branded school uniform, done well, will make a difference... 1/2

Nesting with the new @jonathancoe.bsky.social, and cat. Reader under duvet. Already gripped. That’s Friday sorted. #TheProofOfMyInnocence

I went to the library and got myself some Christmas reading. Free books - for Christmas! Join your local library :)

Just watched Boybands Forever on BBC. Very grateful I did the comeback, not first time round. #NeverForget working with Take That. It truly was THE BEST TIME in my record co life (except meeting Noddy).

I’ve written for the @newstatesman.com about the disastrous housing legacy left by the previous government. It will take time to turn things around, but we can and we must rebuild. www.newstatesman.com/spotlight/20...

Here at #CILIP we've already found the cure to the #OUP word (words?) of the year. Just pop along to your local #Library where you'll be greeted by professional staff who'll give you access to more culture, information & entertainment than you can even imagine. corp.oup.com/news/brain-r...

A massive privilege for me and Leon to be a small part of bringing books and families together. #prisons #prisoners #reading #books

Rental e-bikes and e-scooters encourage Londoners to travel sustainably, but they can cause significant safety issues if parked badly. Our investment in new parking spaces will ensure these services can operate while keeping our streets accessible for all.

Today #Labour announced the biggest reforms to employment support for a generation, ie since the last time we had a Labour government. Labour’s red forms will help the millions of people who have been left unemployed or inactive. This is what Labour is doing. 👇

Libraries are some of the oldest and biggest carbon capture sites in the world, and have a vital role to play in tackling climate change. Keynote @pierstorday.bsky.social suggests more books should be put in libraries, schools and prisons rather than being pulped. #GreenLibraries. 💚

Great to see #Thameslink and #BritishTransportPolice taking this so seriously. Always dial 999 in an emergency. #ZeroTolerance #VAWG #HateCrime

Environmental responsibility and the aim ‘every library a green library’ #CILIP’s Yvonne Morris launches a draft self assessment 4level framework mapped to #GreenLibraries Manifesto. Going live in 2025  🌱1. Sowing the seeds 🪴 2. Green shoots 🌲3. Sturdy sapling 🌳4. Mighty forest

That’s very good news.

The next few years are going to be tough, but just remember what Anne Herbert said: "Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries." The best time to join your local library is right now - if you have not already done so!

Some of the most powerful artists and art works are found behind prison walls. The Koestler Exhibition provides the visitor with a glimpse at a wide range of art. Rehabilitation comes in many forms; never underestimate the power of art to transform someone's life. Go if you can.

Just finished this. Rescued my week. Snorted out loud on the tube. I trip over the tropes, sometimes, who hasn’t since 2010? Thanks @johnofarrell.bsky.social - Emma says it all. And for highlighting #prison literacy - bloody important. #FamilyPolitics

www.linkedin.com/pulse/sketch... I’m sharing this post I wrote a few years ago about working for John Prescott on LinkedIn. A small flavour of the man. Off to the pub now to meet up with two other former JP advisers so we can remember him together.

Having fond memories of my time working behind the scenes with John Prescott as an MPs’ researcher and special adviser. Ignore media focus on pantomime incidents, he was a truly remarkable politician, great to work with and a huge figure in Labour politics.

Very sad and reflective this morning. John Prescott was the most inspiring, brilliant, driven, warm and considerate boss I ever had. I will remember his genius for politics and policy, his passion and commitment, his charm, his chuckle, his fury at social injustice and his kindness. A giant. ❤️
