A misanthrope still in Texas I have no expertise, but I've been paying attention for a long time, does that count?

They do this cause they know the bill is terrible for their states & districts. So they post a tweet opposing it, then fold right after. That way, come election time, they can claim they “fought it.” 99% of the time, that fight was complete BS.

The Right really is in disarray because they cannot seem to figure out if they should push “Zohran Mamdani is going to bring Sharia Law” or “Zohran Mamdani treats his wife with too much equality” as a smear campaign, so they are doing both.

Hey what do you know about this very obvious thing; do you think treating the very existence of a viable Muslim candidate as de facto antisemitic might be a white supremacist op, or www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-...

the Star Tribune just called me and told me they would not be publishing the obituary I wrote for my father as it is “unfair to him” and “in poor taste” so here it is and fuck the strib ✌🏻

It's curious how we don't do any of the pearl-clutching about fairness, cost, non-universality, & moral hazard when the redistribution is to wealthy investors instead of student borrowers. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

If I were a Senate Democrat and Trump had just started an immoral and unconstitutional war, I would not vote to advance his Asst Sec of Defense. But these 10 just did: Fetterman Gallego Hassan Kaine Kelly King Reed Rosen Slotkin Warnock

Jeff Bezos: "We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets." Today's Washington Post opinion page:

Decades of federal jurisprudence on US immigration policy was just flushed down the toilet in an unsigned opinion by the 6 far-right radicals on the Supreme Court. To read the three-Justice dissent is to realize that American rule of law is like an iceberg that is seeing giant chunks fall off daily.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the day Brixton’s Coach and Horses pub was taken over by the country’s first black pub landlord, Oliver ‘George’ Berry

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether you’re asked “why are we funding this” from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator. 🧪🌎

I actually missed the Word the first time I saw this and thought he was just flustered that he was cut off for digressing oh god this is so much worse

Ordinarily I'd be pretty happy for things that hastens the demise and cancellation of contracts for anything Musk-related, but how much unique South Texas wetlands with ocelots and migrating birds/butterflies is he going to destroy in the process?

Even through the narrow lens of polling, discriminating against trans people is unpopular. People who say they want bathroom and sports bans in the abstract don’t want cops outside concert restrooms checking IDs or schools appointing gender inspectors. Similar dynamic on many issues!

y'all, i have so much work to do. i can't have a hall of fame main character today.

Something worth noting is how the press is leaning into the framing that what’s happening in LA is a both sides issue or that they are riots. Even when the LAPD is saying it’s under control, suddenly for the first time in their lives the press is willing to ignore them

ICE agents pulled this guy out of his car and beat the shit out of him, putting him in the E.R. Then they pulled him out of the hospital saying he was a "violent gang member." (He's a Doordash driver with only a traffic ticket on his record.) Now he's just...gone. What a nightmare.

Pope Leo’s first US episcopal appointment, San Diego’s Bishop-designate Pham, a Vietnamese refugee, invites priests and faith leaders to “stand in solidarity”with migrants at courthouse on June 20, as they make court appearances.

"It was probably not the reception the president was hoping for with his debut at the cultural center he took over and now chairs — half full, half booing, and with a strong contingent of drag queens." www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06...

1. A United States Congressman has accepted a job with a private firm. He won't disclose the name of the firm. But, despite all this, HE WILL REMAIN IN CONGRESS INDEFINITELY It is an unprecedented situation that creates a severe conflict of interest Follow along for details

We’ve leapt over a lot of red lines in the last week. But one I find most worrying is Trump/MAGA/ICE have ceased even pretending to claim some criminal pretext for cracking down on protected speech. It’s just straight up “if you criticize us, you’re getting throttled/arrested/disappeared.”

The head of ICE enforcement and removal HAS RESIGNED rather than sanction the unethical demands of the administration.

I am sounding the alarm as loudly as I can that Donald Trump has turned the Department of Justice into a cog in his authoritarian machine to prosecute his political opponents.

Idk man but when the administration that tried to reject humanitarian aid for Los Angeles when it was burning tries to justify their illegal military occupation by saying they aren’t going to let LA burn it kinda sounds like bullshit

BREAKING: A few minutes ago, a vehicle of three people was rammed by a truck belonging to federal immigration authorities in Boyle Heights, CA. According to security footage shown to me, they deployed chemical munitions & detained the driver at gunpoint. All are US citizens according to the wife.

So apparently Riverhead police are saying the men weren’t ICE agents but that they don’t know who they were and they weren’t informed of any US marshal actions ahead of time. This just got weird. The 12-14 men didn’t identify themselves and had masks and long guns per local paper.

Trump has wanted a police state with himself sitting at the top as its undisputed boss since his first administration. The standoff in L.A. shows how truly eager he is to turn America’s vast warmaking powers inward on his domestic foes and critics. Story: www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Funny how there’s always more outrage in the media when a shop window gets broken than when people get kidnapped & sent to a gulag.

It is 100% carrying water for the opposition to participate in this collective delusion that Dems for some reason need to answer for every teen who throws a rock rather than hold the Trump admin accountable for intentionally creating chaos and breaking the law to stoke violence. They are in charge.

always struck by how everyone who screams “we’re full” citing the strain on services is also viciously opposed to the safety net

Gavin Newsom is responding to red state critics who represent states with higher murder rates than California, including Mike Johnson (Louisiana) and Tommy Tuberville (Alabama).

Trump just said, “We’re going to have troops everywhere.” When asked, “What is the line where you’d send in Marines?” he replied, “It’s whatever I think it is.”

Mike Johnson is lying here and he knows he's lying. Karl should've pointed that out to his audience.

ABC suspended reporter Terry Moran for a now-deleted tweet calling Stephen Miller a “world class hater.” They said it violates their standards. Here’s a thought…maybe your standards should allow calling out white nationalism and hate when you see it.

They're tear-gassing babies in strollers and elderly Chicano community leaders in Los Angeles. This is a completely peaceful march.

Every accusation is a confession

The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world. They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

ICE is going to elementary school graduation ceremonies to abduct people. You don't get lower than that. It not only destroys the day for the families in question, it destroys the experience for all the other people and terrorizes the children.

the white house thinks brute force is, no pun intended, a trump card. they don’t anticipate pushback and they don’t know how to handle it with anything other than escalation. the issue is that each escalation is itself a gamble. if protesters refuse to back down, you’ve lost face. (1/?)

Aggrieved whites pretending they only lost out because of "unfair advantages" to minorities is an old script. The Bakke ruling against racial quotas came after Allan Bakke was rejected by 12 different med schools. He sued the *one* that had a racial quota, arguing that and that alone kept him out.
