This is brilliant, beautifully written, and super worth reading. Have you had vaguely inchoate feelings that AI and chatbots and openChatFakeYourResearch things suck and are creepy, but haven't put your thoughts into nice words? Marie probably has done that for you right here :)

Excellent piece on Miller on habeas. Far superior to the surprisingly both-sides-ish coverage by some media. What Miller is claiming the power to do isn’t questionable or dubious. It would be anti-constitutional usurpation. www.stevevladeck.com/p/148-suspen...

This is such an excellent point and media should be reporting it this way. (This is in reference to Miller’s preposterous but still dangerous claim earlier today about the executive branch considering suspending the writ)

Now that I've finished watching Ah Ying, I love it so much. Five stars. A quietly perfect film. Here's an excellent review:

Good, clear summary of the problem: rabble.ca/columnists/f...

The actually normal way to report this. Well done.

The actually normal way to report this. Well don.

According to a congressman present, ICE arrested the Mayor of Newark in his own city while he was outside of an ICE facility. He wasn’t protesting or trespassing—he was serving as Mayor. This regime is lawless, reckless and trampling on the constitution.

Not that this should all fall to @booker.senate.gov, but if ever there was a time to get into good trouble, it's when your mayoral predecessor has been disappeared by masked agents of the fascist state.

I have heard multiple stories like this. Some involved octogenarian Canadian Jews who were turned back.

Overjoyed by the release of another political prisoner.

And this is why due process, and requiring the government to justify to a judge *why* they grabbed you off the street and stuck you in jail, matters

John's absolutely right. I just (finally) realised this last week. Something about Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Roger's scathing finding of contempt makes Apple's reversal/transformation absolutely clear. Looking forward to this week's Accidental Tech Podcast, when they'll surely talk this over.

To be dissed by one pope, Mr Vance, may be regarded as a misfortune; to be dissed by two popes looks like carelessness.

To subtitle a new Chinese film inspired (somewhat obscurely) by the poetry of Haizi 海子, I needed to read some of this modern lyric poet’s works. Fortunately Dan Murphy has a beautiful translation w parallel Chinese & English texts: Over Autumn Rooftops: 1/ hostpublications.com/products/ove...

Hope this will happen. But afraid Carney will limit himself here because of 1) the fierce demonization against policies addressing climate change that Poilievre created in Canada, and 2) the Alberta government's determination to poison and sabotage any space Carney has to be active here.

It's darkly funny how little attention the masked secret police receive. Last year it seemed that the chattering class would never shut up about masked undergraduates. Perhaps they saw the encampments as more of a threat to their interests than the jackboots?

“In a time of destruction, create something. A poem. A parade. A community. A school. A vow. A moral principle. One peaceful moment.” -Maxine Hong Kingston (from the book she wrote from scratch after her home burnt down and she lost all her drafts in the Oakland forest fires of 1991)

‘Scorched earth’ seems accurate. Indefensible, shameful, criminal.

Here is thr New York Times’ take on that exchange: Carney: Canada is never for sale, right to Trump’s face.

Carney showing finesse here, saying something absolute in a way calculated to be non-inflammatory. Impressed.

What is the fall-back procedure is when an air traffic control centre loses contact with the aircraft it's guiding (in this case about 90 seconds). Can secondary ATC centres take over, temporarily? Aircraft can't all just freeze (or do patterns) in place? What is the standard response?

Kertész's critique of the spectacularization of the Holocaust seems more relevant than ever: see the Republican's fake "anti-semitism" hearing that the Guardian writes about here (h/t @jhoberman.bsky.social )

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025... In other words, this "antisemitism hearing" is itself antisemitic.

I tend to agree with you. But if that’s the case, what can be done to oppose her that doesn’t inflame a 10 to 20% separatist sentiment into something closer to 50%?

A world historical crime, taking place in full view, with the perpetrators so convinced of their impunity that they can brag about genocidal intent, and it’s hard not to agree with their calculation that no one will stop them and no one will be held accountable

Israel plans to occupy and flatten all of Gaza if no hostage and ceasefire deal is reached by the end of President Trump's trip to the Middle East two weeks from now. My story on @axios.com www.axios.com/2025/05/05/i...

Sometimes just looking at this, Michelangelo’s most gorgeous building, the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Capitoline, calms me down, reassures that we can create beauty in this real world.

“the commercial free speech of energy companies”: does that even mean anything at all? The Alberta Premier obviously is referring to the freedom to pollute, the freedom to choke life, to destroy. That’s not “speech”. That’s not a protected freedom.

No one (zero) has come out ahead by "surrender in advance" to Trump -Paul Weiss will take its place alongside Lindsey Graham, Neville Chamberlain etc -Today @anntelnaes.bsky.social won Pulitzer for cartoon the WaPo was afraid to publish—and Bezos then fired editor who killed it, anyway Stand up.

Imre Kertész on transformation of the Holocaust into a tool, a product, a spectacle (and, by extension, a defence for further barbarism).

The most important point in the BBC headline here is at the end, in small print. To “displace most Palestinians in Gaza” is a horrific war crime, inflicted on millions of people. The brutality and scale should shock us. And compel action. Headlines like this need to underline the shock, not mask it.

This is a tragedy and a needless own-goal by the U.S. , which is now blindfolding itself to events in Uyghur, Tibet and ceding the info-space to PRC propaganda. hongkongfp.com/2025/05/03/r...

Last post referred to this:

True. Which makes the US regime's economic militarization of foreign films tonight completely bizarre and self-destructive. Unless the US actually wants the rest of the world to stop watching their films? Perhaps that's part of the "destroy America" policy of the current US regime, after all.
