"they are going to end cancer research and kill its top scientists" is the kind of thing that would get you laughed out of the writer's room on saturday morning cartoons and it is literally what's happening

Wow—15 international students at the University of Central Florida have had their visas revoked as a result of the school's signed partnership with ICE. One was detained. Literally handed over to immigration cops by their own university. Despicable.

The idea that #AI and #robotics may revolutionize science isn't new. But a group of researchers from 11 institutions is proposing a detailed approach to use this tech *AND* coordinate globally to address research challenges. (short 🧵) 🧪⚗️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

“It’s like being handed a sack full of rabid beavers.” <-- almost certainly the best quote I've read in a news story this week. apnews.com/article/cana...

This is a good introduction to some of the limitations of generative AI for folks who aren't familiar with those limitations. It is also a delightful read. Remember, as absolutely no one has ever said in real life, "a loose dog won't surf."✨ #AI #GenerativeAI www.wired.com/story/google...

The Amazing Karnak: “Show me a harebrained ploy virtually certain to invoke the wrath of even the most conservative judge who has any devotion to traditional legal principles!” <opens envelope>

Time for folks to subscribe to @chrisgeidner.bsky.social ‘s LawDork

“Universities do things private companies with research capacities cannot: train research talent, conduct basic research with uncertain payoffs, and distribute knowledge as a public good. And the rewards have been enormous…We are richer and healthier for the investment.”

And now I find out the Questlove Supreme podcast is closing up shop? Man, today stinks. That podcast was a big part of my mental health maintenance during the pandemic.

You know things are bad when even normally staunch Republican acquaintances are referring to ICE agents as the Gestapo.

If anyone wants to know what it’s like to live in the US: -I have a shoulder injury -I have insurance and a full-time job -I’m not seeing an MD about it because the expense would blow my budget for the rest of the year. Our healthcare system sucks. And my shoulder hurts.

When I was growing up autistic kids were "hyper" or "had water on the brain" and there was always a raft of "weird kids" who were socially ostracized because they had a hard time people-ing. If you don't think autism existed before it was commonly called "autism," it's because you chose not to see.

They didn’t produce warrants or display any identification when asked. These could honestly have been three guys off the street, kidnapping people from a courthouse. This is insane.

My expert analysis of this order: Judge Xinis big mad

one of these politicians has been subjected to a systematic campaign of character assassination by the british state, using both legal and dubious means to tarnish their reputation over irrelevant storms in a teacup in order to arrest the growth of their political movement. the other is a man

People often overestimate how much we understand about the world. There are still a lot of mysteries out there, folks. We’re still making fundamental discoveries about the human body! This is one reason research funding is so important.🧪 news.ncsu.edu/2023/04/vari...

man, it's just absolutely bizarre to see so many institutions tucking tail and running from trump, even as he's underwater *on every single issue, including immigration* in less than 100 days. total elite failure.

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles. Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.

NEW from @nytimes.com: A bone-chilling account. A Venezuelan man detained alongside the 238 sent to El Salvador on March 15 seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. His name isn't among the names of those sent to CECOT that day and no one spotted him among those men. He's just... gone.

Harvard 3, Columbia 0 This is turning into a rout www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

Hegseth was Trump’s top choice for Secretary of Defense. How incompetent will his replacement be? The mind reels.

I am increasingly convinced that many people are drawn to AI because it is less likely to point out their mediocrity and/or sociopathy.

I didn't think Henry Blodget could do anything funnier than the time he wrote about flying on an airplane but he's done it. that son of a bitch has done it. www.regenerator1.com/p/building-o...

Really want to encourage people to have kids? Address skyrocketing healthcare and childcare costs. Address a health system that has *THE HIGHEST* maternal death rate of any high-income nation. Address gun control and climate, so that people have some optimism about the future.
