A good example of depoliticisation in action is the most recent govt paper on climate change education, which demands political impartiality, despite the cause being clearly rooted in politics… I wonder why someone like Nadim Zahawi wouldn’t want to link capitalism with climate change?

Yes to this, a million times. Once the classroom has been depoliticised it becomes an ideological state apparatus par excellence, reproducing and reifying social norms as if they were immutable facts.

Doo doo doo, doo do doo doo doo, Big Jilm!

1 / A fair enough point, but it’s important to note this isn’t arbitrary…it’s because the right pose less of a threat to liberal class interests. Despite liberalism’s invocation of justice, freedom etc it’s quite happy to accept intensified discrimination if it protects capitalist social relations

Ten years ago, I argued that "much of the coverage and analysis of parties such as UKIP has been skewed and hyped" Nothing has changed in the coverage but far right politics have become increasingly mainstream and the crisis of democracy has deepened www.opendemocracy.net/en/can-europ...

Reform’s rise is a direct consequence of both Labour and the Tories presenting Corbyn’s mild program of social democratic reform as abject, whilst at the same time allowing Farage to make 10 trillion appearances on Question Time…

Farage isn’t where he is because he is a master strategist or because his policies are ‘naturally’ popular… He’s consistently platformed as part of the establishment, playing the useful role of providing an ‘alternative’ that doesn’t dole out free internet, tax the rich or nationalise anything…

The near relentless churn of psychology articles I see academically sprucing up ‘self help life hack’ vibes and ignoring the fact we are all suffering from a serious case of late-stage capitalism is starting to get to me…

Labour staffers report that Ashworth was witnessed staring into the middle distance with a glazed look, softly humming Midas Touch by Midnight Star to himself, as the citizens of Runcorn chased him off their lawns… youtu.be/qRbEBf_ShDA?...

It’s finally dawning on me…the horror! I thought everything would turn out great! It’s almost like Trump hasn’t even heard of the special relationship!

Morrisons FM is raising its game. Nowadays I can reasonably expect to do my weekly shop whilst listening to Just What I Needed by the Cars or a Steely Dan song about how Donald Fagan’s taste in Colombian cannabis is out of step with the next generation’s preference for Peruvian strains…

This year is 2028, I throw an apple core out of the window of my car and am immediately crushed to death by a drone with a big Timmy Mallet style hammer attached to it.

Good thread

Exclusive: Proportion of English pupils saying they dislike school doubles in eight years educationuncovered.co.uk/news/proport... Some 48% of English 14-year-olds, and 28% of 10-year-olds said they did not like school in 2023, compared to 24% and 14% in 2015.

these butterflies need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. i've had one of my worst years ever too but you don't see me whining to the gardeners

So is Keir Starmer, and therein lies the problem.

The problem we have defining class is there’s no easy way to measure it… The closest boffins have got is the development of a questionnaire which asks participants q’s like: 1) do you call it dinner or tea? 2) did you grow up in a pebbledash semi? 3) was your father a toolmaker? Etc etc

I'm looking for a new academic role, teaching or research, in the UK or Ireland - so would appreciate it if anyone could let me know of any opportunities, funding, etc. in the areas I work in!

The coherent definition: you are only working class if you think going to work is class

As Francis Fukuyama once said ‘we’re all middle class now!’

#edpsychs, #edusky and everyone else. Listen to this.

This is not true…the Supreme Court ruling will make it harder for protected characteristic rules to be enforced, because they are being enforced by an increasingly transphobic system. Even if it were true, the ruling will clearly do psychological damage via the violence of misrecognition

This is the kind of practical action we need as the culture war escalates. Wild that a small music venue is prepared to do this while massive, wealthy institutions like my employer - a university - are not. But this is where people can put pressure as employees, customers, and service users.
