What relevance does the replication crisis have for non-academic research, such as the methods used to evaluate social programs? In a new paper with Ben McNamee and Michael Lenczner, we argue that the answer could be quite a lot Article: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... OA: osf.io/6hevp

this is easily the worst bipartisan idea in the past half decade... what?

This paper was a lot of work and hides many cool findings, notably in Supplement. In this thread I present a few findings that you may have missed 👇

Ok security-minded folks: what platform should one move to from here? “Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row” www.bbc.com/news/article...

Nice to see The Economist spotlighting our research and emphasising that we are “trying to paint a complete picture with both hands tied behind their back”. Understanding new technologies requires not just good quality and independent data, but long term and sustainable investment.

"such studies might seem compelling to many lay readers, there are good reasons to doubt...Many studies in social psychology generate headlines by appearing to show certain causes or associations, only to have their findings modified or completely rejected when others try to replicate the findings."

Wonderful hearing our team's Dr. @karenlauram.bsky.social sharing her expert perspective on how young people navigate a challenging online information environment.

Refreshing piece by Amy Fleming in The Guardian, where I joined scholars to unpack misconceptions that disempower parents & young people around tech. Evidence doesn’t support fear—our approach shouldn’t either. Let’s pause panic & do better for families in 2025! www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

Indeed! How do we escape this cycle of silliness? In our paper we propose a constructive way forward. Pivoting from fear-based reactions to a proactive multi-stakeholder framework. Researchers, families, and young people cannot face the burden of being let down by policy and industry again.

If researchers are going to do right by families and young people on the impact of AI on mental health, we need to get our act together. We need to learn from the mistakes we've made on screens, social media, and smart phones. Quite happy to see our @oiioxford.bsky.social team's efforts published!

My first time acting as a recommender for the ERROR project. Huge props to the authors @erichehman.bsky.social et al. for exposing themselves to this detailed post-pub peer review and to Will Lowe @conjugateprior.org for his detailed review and reproduction.

Because, Mike, everything is stupid.

It's a genuine pleasure to be part of reintroducing science and rigour into this important question!

A great debut blog by Amanda, co-written by the brilliant @louiselasala.bsky.social! I was lucky enough to listen to a talk about this study and Luisa’s broader PhD when she visited the University of Bath - this blog and the paper are definitely worth a read!

Gather round kids and let me tell you a story about a real technology ban...

These motivational words changed my life 😂

“…I disagree with the main points in the critique and will argue that statcheck does exactly what it is designed to do: detect inconsistencies in Null Hypothesis Significance Tests (NHST) reported according to the guidelines of the American Psychological Association…”

@johannesbreuer.com told me if you follow them they'll give you free data

Great to see this initiative providing these insights! Fingers crossed programmes like these don't depend on a few brave souls putting their work forward for scrutiny. I'd like to see this integrated into how funders evaluate the lifecycle of all research they support in the public interest.

in heterodox academic circles, haidt is held up as an example of their superior objectivity and rigor. and he really is the best they’ve got! his greatest strength is his ability to flatter the powerful and swindle the public

📣 Some good news to start off the new year: I'm delighted to share that my @mitpress.bsky.social book, "Kids Across the Spectrums: Growing Up Autistic in the Digital Age," has been named a 2024 Choice Outstanding Academic Title by the American Library Association!

Well this seems bad, a flood of lawsuits filed based on weak evidence, which in turn is driving how we talk about social harms… A lot of money, time, and energy is about to be wasted because moral entrepreneurs hate social media more than they actually care about evidence and protecting kids.

Five minutes on LinkedIn around online safety and you'll find it yourself inundated with technosolutionist reply guy bullshit. It sounds great until you scratch the surface even a little.

Genuinely happy to this hit its goal! Can't wait to play.

Interesting analysis of the new #DSA risk assessments by @markscott.bsky.social The devil is in the details 👿 💯 And we need much more transparency as to how conclusions are made. Now much of this is opaque! #commsky #eusky #socialmedia www.digitalpolitics.co/newsletter02...

Reflecting on this past week... I think it's crazy that reading how this professor talks (in private) to senior government about world-leading researchers isn't even the strangest thing I've encountered trying to wrap my head all of this.

It was great to have an opportunity to discuss our latest research with Prof Vicki Nash on this podcast! @oiioxford.bsky.social This research is based on conversations with 16-17 year olds in the UK who shared with us how they feel about parental digital mediation of their lives.

One of my favorite authors writes beautifully about her son. Congrats on parenting a teenager - they really are the best of us.

Generally happy to see this new journal from the APS team (www.psychologicalscience.org/publications...) but the name confuses me: "Advances in Psychological Science Open" Open what? Open doors? Open for taxpayer money donations for typesetting? e.g. RSOS is RS Open *Science*.

"Every idealogue has righteousness, and righteousness is basically chicken pox for the soul — it breaks out everywhere. Having become convinced you are on the side of the angels, you give yourself permission to throw other things out of the moral calculus boat."

Fascinating new piece in @us.theconversation.com about the challenges of blanket tech bans for youth by highlighting the case study of China and it's strict limits on minors' game play and social media use. theconversation.com/china-restri...

"....it’s complicated. And beware of people peddling over-simplified theories and solutions to very complex problems. They're almost always trying to sell you something." How a Tech Panic is Born, compelling piece by Dr. Craig Sewall #digitalwellbeing craigsewall.substack.com/p/how-to-tec...

ICYMI: Watch @shuhbillskee.bsky.social @oiioxford.bsky.social talking about his collaboration with games developer @futurlab.co.uk. In the video, he highlights the importance of working with real player data to explore the wellbeing benefits of playing computer game Powerwash Simulator.

"I hope my pessimistic side is proven wrong for once and we fix some of the issues and collect better data, before the hype cycle moves on to the next thing, presumably AI companions."

"Przybylski worries that the country’s blunt approach will only push vulnerable children to corners of the Internet where they are more likely to be exposed to harm, such as unmoderated chat rooms." #digitalwellbeing #evidencebasedpolicy #adolescenthealth www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Warning labels for social media is the most "doing something because we're stupid, have no ideas, but feel we *must* do something" solution, so it's no surprise that it's Rob Bonta's best idea. Not only would it be unconstitutional, it would also likely do harm.

Where do things stand with these social media age bans? I joined DW to share a bit of our perspective as researchers whose work has been (mis)used in the Australian lawmaking. www.dw.com/en/how-austr...

New preprint!
