Last year the Japanese variety show Gaki no Tsukai had the famous singer Yoko Takahashi go undercover at a restaurant where she fooled everyone right up until she took the stage and belted out A Cruel Angel's Thesis, the intro song to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Just stunning.

Honestly, the "no new fans club" is the most important thing here. In that having these mega-franchises marginalise new characters and perspectives to indulge in nostalgia aimed at a dwindling preexisting fandom is self-defeating. Why would new viewers want to invest in this?
