New York: come watch “Emergent City” this Tuesday 4/29 at DCTV Firehouse 7:00pm, followed by my Q&A with the directors and exec producer. An incredible Sunset Park doc about zoning and gentrification, which makes the city and its people feel alive and in a constant state of transition.

Out today: Chinese immigrant drama “Blue Sun Palace” finds gentle emotional balance joysauce.com/chinese-immi...

I'm with Siddhant— I question whether this product (at least based on the trailer and stills) qualifies as "a movie," and I don't find the director or Berlinale commentary about its value convincing. But this piece is a fascinating window into the justifications people are presenting for AI films.

Gareth Evans's long-delayed "Havoc" hits Netflix tomorrow. It's fine! A fun facsimile of Hollywood cop procedurals, with another mumbly performance from Tom Hardy (complimentary!) and occasional chaotic panache. mashable.com/article/havo...

Fascinating read

I'm viscerally against gen AI filmmaking. I'm also fascinated by its allure for so many artists—and bothered that festivals like #Berlinale2025 would platform an entirely AI-generated feature, "What's Next?" So I sat down with its director to talk about it www.polygon.com/ai-artificia...

From Higuchi Shinji ("Shin Godzilla"), action thriller "Bullet Train Explosion" remakes Sato Junya’s 1975 original with a wink. Plays like a propaganda film for the East Japan Railway Company—given its sincerity, that may not be a bad thing. Now on Netflix joysauce.com/bullet-train...

Out this week, Hur Jin-ho’s “A Normal Family,” which intentionally relegates its most interesting characters—teens accused of a violent crimes—to the margins of their parents' story. www.truthdig.com/articles/ent...

The first 3 episodes of "Andor" season 2 are out. It starts with a minor misstep—really, the series' first—but the rest of Chapter 1 is riveting regardless, proving we're in safe hands. The best Star Wars story is back with a vengeance. joysauce.com/star-wars-sp...

Mild "Andor" detail: There's a delightful diegetic dance track in season 2 where the only lyric is the word "NIAMOS!" That's the name of the beach planet Cassian hides out on in season 1—making it the Star Wars equivalent of yelling "MIAMI" This must mean there's a space Pitbull

Ahead of its season 2 premiere tomorrow: a look back at what makes “Andor” not just special, but vital—as a series about the mechanics of fascism—and why you should watch it even if you’re unfamiliar with Star Wars. www.inverse.com/entertainmen...

Wrote about one incredible shot midway through "Sinners" that functions as its visual, musical, and thematic centerpiece. One of the best things I've seen this year: joysauce.com/the-incredib...

Let’s go

Fantastic piece. The scene described in this article was so moving.

This is the moment sinners went from, really good to one of the best of the year, and I can’t wait for more people to see this movie and this scene in particular.

This shot had me absolutely awestruck in the cinema today. One of the boldest pieces of filmmaking I've seen in years.

I remember this scene and just in awe of what I was seeing. Great article, Siddhant. I'll be watching this again and enjoying it even more

Everyone is talking about that sensational barn burner scene in Sinners, and this wonderful piece by Siddhant Adlakha describes it in all its magestic detail! It's truly the best cinematic moment of the year. It's a magical experience that shows movies can do things no other art form can. #FilmSky

Thunderbolts starting to look like a real movie, fingers crossed

Editor pals, I will be at #Cannes2025, hit me up if you’re looking for some coverage! My reviews from last year: x.com/SiddhantAdla...

Really love “One to One: John & Yoko,” which is out now in IMAX (expands next week), and creates an essayistic political/cultural portrait through what the couple would’ve likely watched on TV in their New York apartment joysauce.com/the-enormous...

‘The Teacher’ Review: A Powerful but Imbalanced West Bank Drama variety.com/2025/film/re...

Hi folks, I'll be live on CBC at 10:00am ET to discuss the delightful queer romcom "A Nice Indian Boy," the tame liberal action fantasy "G20," and more www.youtube.com/watch?v=meeS...

SINNERS was already one of my most anticipated movies of the spring, but @siddhantadlakha.bsky.social just upped the ante. This sounds fascinating!

Vampire-Western-Musical "Sinners" is a big, bold, beautiful mess from Ryan Coogler, who wrestles with what it means to be a liberated filmmaker still working within studio constraints. A goofy, chilling, spiritual splatter film with prestige sheen. Love it www.polygon.com/horror/55648...

New York: Nearly 2 years after its TIFF premiere, West Bank-shot drama "The Teacher" is finally out this week. I'll be moderating a Q&A with director Farah Nabulsi and actor Saleh Bakri after its opening night screening at @AngelikaFilmNY 7:05pm, Thursday April 10th

“Forge,” a slow-burn Chinese American heist drama, ironically apes the texture of a film about culture and family bonds without capturing the underlying authenticity. #SXSW2025 joysauce.com/forge-is-a-s...

New York: If you have tickets to the IMAX sneak preview of "Warfare" this Monday (4/7) at AMC Lincoln Sq, stick around after for my Q&A with directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, and several members of the cast

“A Minecraft Movie” is deeply unpleasant. A dull film about creativity that sucks the joy and wit out of creating—accidentally perfect for the age of generative A.I. joysauce.com/a-minecraft-...

Annapurna Sriram’s "Fucktoys" is a delightful trashterpiece in the vein of John Waters. Not one to usually scream "representation!" from the rooftops, but seeing a South Asian woman take charge of her own image with such gusto is special. #SXSW2025 joysauce.com/annapurna-sr...
