Environmental Reporter @laurapaskus.bsky.social shares stark examples of the climate crisis in New Mexico and calls for urgent, local action. #NMleg

ICYMI: a great overview of one of CVNM's priority bills, SB 5 Game Commission Reform, that has made its way to to the Governor's desk. Thank you to the Lujan Grisham Administration & Legislators for making this effort possible! #NMpol #NMleg shorturl.at/yLkOV

Extinction is monstrous. Call or email Governor Lujan Grisham and urge her to vote YES on SB 5 for New Mexico wildlife reform and protect amazing creatures (like Gila monsters) for generations to come! www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-...

“We don’t know what’s happened to these four dozen New Mexicans. They’ve effectively disappeared. They’re gone,” said Becca Sheff, senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico.

📣📣📣 “Oil and gas can well afford to step up. Big industry is using its exclusive access to make it seem like their cost is our cost when in reality fossil fuel executives can pay their fair share for common sense pollution reductions in our state.” www.abqjournal.com/opinion/arti...

The House passed HB128 to improve access to solar energy & enhance resiliency for NM’s rural & tribal communities. The Local Solar Access Fund would help govt & tribal entities build clean energy infrastructure, power public buildings & reduce energy costs. 📷: Lead sponsor @reenaszcz.bsky.social

Today, the House passed HB 13 - powering up NM’s electrical grid for the clean energy & economic development goals of our future! This would require public utilities to create plans for improving energy generation, infrastructure, & distribution for approval by the PRC. @dayhochmanvigil.bsky.social

"Let’s stop the misinformation. Economics closed [San Juan Generation Station]. The ETA has helped soften that blow. But there’s more to do." TY @nativevoters.bsky.social in today's @thenewmexican.bsky.social It's time to #ActonClimate! www.santafenewmexican.com/opinion/my_v...

ICYMI: @nativevoters.bsky.social ran an op-ed in the @thenewmexican.bsky.social debunking ETA misinformation and calling for climate bills like SB 48 Community Resilience Fund to pass this session. We agree!!! #NMpol #NMleg shorturl.at/XcBJZ

What a powerful presentation of HB14 by @nmhousedems.bsky.social. Our resources, from public lands, are not for the profit of a multibillion dollar industry. They are for the benefit of our people. This tax credit transformative for entire communities. #NMleg

The U.S. under Biden produced more oil than any country EVER (and New Mexico is the No. 2 oil-producing state). Trump is of course lying; oil corps don’t WANT to drill more because the price will lower. The only “energy emergency” is that the energy we produce most of is endangering our children.

We have climate heroes in NM ❤️

"Our citizens deserve to have clear air, clean land, clean water. Our citizens are rising up & saying you must do something about the climate impacts in New Mexico," Sen. Stewart said on NM In Focus about the Clear Horizons suite of bills. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k02...

Trump moves to close the home site of the famous Keeling Curve, the Mona Loa site for NOAA that's been measuring CO2 concentration data since the 1950's. Gift article. wapo.st/4i7891y

🚨 ACTION NEEDED: New Mexico HB91 is heading to the Senate Floor! This bill will lower energy costs for low-income families, but we need YOUR voice to get it passed! #FairRatesForNM #nmpol #nmleg

Sen Sharer thinks that forest fires can be stopped with forest management with the state is bone dry and the winds are extreme as they are today. He thinks net zero is insane. What's more insane is filling our atmosphere with methane and C02 and just hope for the best.

We're surprised! Oil and gas doesn't want to pay a fair royalty rate on our State Land Resource for our kids?

House Tax Chair Lente reminds us that a rate adjustment on oil (to equalize rates on gas) is a tax of industry principally outside NM to benefit New Mexicans. #NNleg

Rep. Terrazas claims that our safeguards for air and water should be in place in lieu of industry paying fair taxes?...What about the cost of cleaning up our air and water? Just can't make that add up. @NMleg

Rep Silva reminds us that with the profound subsidies oil and gas receives from the federal government, we're never truly at the table with them. #NMleg

Rep. Montoya says oil and gas operators that go to Texas know what they can count on. True. Higher royalty rates than New Mexico (weird). Weaker clean air protections than New Mexico (geez). Oil and gas will stay right where they are, profiting from our publicly owned natural resources. #NMleg

“The federal government has stepped back. It is not going to regulate polluted waters or skies. … For New Mexico to build for the future … we are on our own. The good news is that by passing climate-focused laws, New Mexico can strengthen itself for the future — before it’s too late.”

Chair McQueen rightly asks, how can we know that carbon sequestration is being used to capture existing carbon as opposed to driving new sources of carbon emissions. #NMleg

Rep. Murphy says industry aren't looters and polluters? They're spending $100K A WEEK on flashy ads, spreading fear and lies in #NMleg to protect their profits. Big oil doesn’t seem care about the devastating climate impacts to NM - but our legislators should. Take action now.

The NM Oil and Gas Association spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on ads targeting the @clearhorizonsnm.bsky.social (SB4), leaving out that their emissions are super charging climate change, costing our state immeasurably.

Rep. Sena Cortez on equalizing oil taxes to gas taxes, more money here means less money there. What she means is that the oil industry wants more money for themselves, instead of more money for the people of New Mexico. No action in the state impacts the price of oil or related products.

Senate Republicans are worried that they won't have a place to charge their Teslas....Don't worry, you'll mostly charge at home. And if you need to charge there's a fast charger right in front of the Roundhouse. #NMLeg

Opponents: it's too vague. Let's be clear: SB4 lays out a framework for a regulatory process that will involve affected parties, technical experts, economic considerations. That's how this always works. There aren't penalties; there will be incentives and other mechanisms #nmleg

Good afternoon, #NMPol #NMLeg! Right now, the Senate Finance Committee is hearing from SO MANY New Mexicans testify in favor of SB4, the Clear Horizons Act to codify emissions limits set forth in a @govmlg.bsky.social executive order and other good #ClimateAction. Join us on Zoom:

Industry reps oppose the Clear Horizons Act with the tired old saw that NM climate action won’t make a difference. New Mexico is the 2nd-biggest oil producer in the U.S. and top-10 gas producer. NM leaders advancing proactive solutions is a bright spot in a grim time. We make a difference. #nmleg

Say it with us: PNM announced closure of San Juan coal plant in 2017 because coal is expensive. The ETA was passed in 2019 to invest in the surrounding community and make sure coal workers got both severance and job-training funding. #nmlegis #ClearHorizonsAct #SB4

We're before the #NMleg Sen. Finance Cmt. on SB4, the Clear Horizons Act, a well-designed climate bill. All these folks standing are taking time from their day to support climate action. May they prevail over the oil & gas interests in opposition to this bill. Be fierce, people ✊🏼.

Take action RIGHT NOW for state level climate action in New Mexico, Taoseños!

Several Senators stated NM produces the "cleanest barrel of oil in the world." Context is important - it's cleaner because of NM regs requiring the industry to curb methane venting and flaring. Even with regs, industry is booming. #nmpol #nmleg #energy www.lcsun-news.com/story/news/2...

Senator Ezell describes the smell of oil and gas pollution as the smell of money.... The cost of all that contamination? Close to incalculable. Ferocious fires followed by floods, extreme heat and drought. #ActonClimate Vote yes on SB4. Chevron in Exxon are busy lobbying against our future.

Mon Feb 24 join EDF’s Matthew Harrington to learn why the Environmental Defense Fund has a methane satellite. Register on Zoom - 350NM Speaker Series us02web.zoom.us/meeting/regi... @vivarioarriba.bsky.social @sierrariogrande.bsky.social @riogranderift.bsky.social @progressnownm.bsky.social

Sen Block is taking it WAAAAY back to 1990 denying the obvious climate crisis. Claims this year was only "tied" for hottest year in Albuquerque. Says we should protect people from nuclear war instead..... We're wondering, do we have to choose? #NMleg

Just to clarify, PNM announced they would close the San Juan Generating Station in 2017. It was expensive and polluting. The legislature passed the Energy Transition Act in 2019 to help soften the blow for the community. #NMleg

Joining us for Land Water and Wildlife Day on Feb. 20th at the Roundhouse, meet Kiara! She is a mid-content wolfdog who is 12 years old and loves being a Wild Spirit Ambassador.

We 💖 you Senate Pro Tem Mimi Stewart. Without you, NM would be as dry as a climate-denied future! 💕 Share this if you want Sen. Stewart to feel the love across the state! 💕

Huge kudos to @senatorwirth.bsky.social for his expert leadership! SB 21/22 would restore New Mexico water quality protections to the same level that existed for decades, starting in 1972 w/passage of the Clean Water Act, b/f SCOTUS eroded them, most recently in 2023 Sackett v. EPA. #NMleg #NMpol

Sen. Scott, despite your O&G fluffing, the NM oil and gas industry only employs 2% of the New Mexico workforce. www.dws.state.nm.us/Portals/0/DM...

Ah, Sen. Ezell, US fire departments responded to an estimated annual average of 215,096 vehicle fires in the United States from 2018–2022. 99% from gas and diesel vehicles. www.nfpa.org/education-an...

Senator Scott implies that we're all here supporting this bill because we "want the money" after industry just stood up to oppose the bill as a "subsidy"? Wow. We're here to build out sustainable economies, jobs and climate. #NMleg
