The top 1% evade $163 billion in taxes per year — enough to end homelessness, hunger, and pay for universal childcare. 👆🏻 This is the crime wave we should be talking more about.

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

no you don't understand due process means when the libs let you wriggle out on a technicality and youre not even white

It is morally indefensible to refer to any human being as a form of vermin unless it's Stephen Miller and you are calling him Senior Naked Mole Rat in which case god's glory be upon you

Democratic pols shld really be mocking Trump as acting like a foreign strongman, dictator, autocrat etc. is he going to start wearing epaulets and a military uniform next? Etc. the archetype is deeply woven into American civic culture as a figure or scorn and menace.

Seems like a good day to remind everyone that Auschwitz — a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps — was not located in Nazi Germany either.

I'm tired of hearing "we need to start somewhere" from people who ignore existing movements and refuse to learn from the history and veterans of the struggle. We already started. We don't need to "start somewhere" multiple times a year because you just discovered activism. Start by learning.

Hey can we tax rich people more? Rich person: don’t be silly with these crazy impossible ideas, we simply need to achieve the singularity

I reported on economics full-time in 2020. It taught me there are no incentives to have a baby in the US. Women in the US have to pay for pre-natal, medical and child care, earn less, do most of the parenting and chores, get promoted less, and are now at 27% higher risk of maternal mortality.

North Carolina voted 47.8% for Kamala Harris but if you look in these replies you will see joy and jubilation for their suffering because it’s a red state and therefore everyone is bad

The worst part is that there were people in lots of these states really busting their asses to try to overcome all of the gerrymandering, disenfranchisement, and voter intimidation. And the response is “lol u voted for it.”

This is why I take the time to explain bureaucracies to my students. They’ve only ever heard it as a bad word, but haven’t stopped to think why they exist. Any organization of sufficient size, I tell them, requires a bureaucratic structure in order to function.

China, hell. With Trump in charge we'd lose a war against Canada.

I won’t read substack on the train I will not read it in the rain I will not read it on my phone I will not read it far from home I won’t read even the brightest star Get out, get out, of the Nazi bar

Can we please stop saying 'Trump wants to be a dictator'? He's sending people to gulags, overriding Congress & the courts, tearing up treaties, dismantling the gov't, & cratering the economy now, right now, b/c he feels like it. He's a dictator. What more does he have to do to earn his merit badge?

Tom Homan always looks like he lives under a bridge in a fairy tale and eats everybody who tries to cross

"We knew what we were doing. We knew about the indescribable suffering we were causing. We knew about the crimes we were committing, in real time. We knew, and declared for all the world to hear that this was what justice looked like, this was the face of morality."

Working on a rough taxonomy and I think this lot can generally be classified as pigs, scorpions, worms, or potatoes: Pigs: Trump, Musk, Homan, Hegseth Scorpions: Miller, Noem, RFK, Bondi Worms: Rubio, M. Johnson, Lutnick, Bessent Potatoes: Schumer, Jeffries, Collins, Warner

Biggest commitment to a 3 second joke I've ever seen

the hell with dire wolves can somebody bring actual Democrats back from extinction

I think this is the gadget in Logan's Run that kills all the 30-year-olds

move slowly and build things

Looking forward to hearing people getting told to HODL, but with US treasuries

I have been running a trade deficit with the grocery store for years. As much as I buy from them, they refuse to publish any of my columns.

I'm selling my copy of the Stedelijk Museum catalog 498, 1971. Ton Bruynèl, Dick Raaijmakers and Peter Struyken. Wonderful examples of early explorations of procedural and computational art and music. Complete with three 7", 33⅓ RPM flexidiscs (in good condition […] [Original post on typo.social]
