HELP NEEDED 🪶 I'm doing a large-scale synthesis for a PhD chapter, and some of my search hits are published in journals I can't access or by authors for whom I can't find contact info. If anyone has access to these papers/journals or knows how to get in touch with the authors, please let me know!

In case this is helpful to someone out there: I'm moving to Ball State University this August, and I'll have a support for MS students over the next three years (RAs/TAs) If your lab has talented students graduating this spring, I welcome them to reach out and talk about the opportunities.

"from 1965 to 2020, nearly half the variation in publication trends among 293 North American male passerine & near-passerine birds was explained by 3 factors subject to human bias: aesthetic salience (visual appeal), range size (familiarity) & number of universities within ranges (accessibility)"

🐦 Do some birds have #PrettyPrivilege? 💫 New paper: doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2024.2846 We show that ~half the variation in research effort on 293 bird species in US+Canada is explained by just 3 factors: 1)visual appeal, 2)range size, & 3)# of universities w/in ranges. What we did & why it matters:🧵

every day I wake up or fall asleep to new unimaginable horrors

Trying to come up with the words to say. I'm terrified for our students. We just received an email that an international grad student at UMN has been detained. Minnesota has laws stating police are not required to provide info to ICE. Admin claims no info was given. How can we protect our people?

future researchers will remember 2025 as the year when suddenly the data for all kinds of important things stops getting recorded

Very clear the current regime has no intention of continuing to allow actual basic science in any form to continue with federal funding in the US.

To update people on the NSF PRFB situation: despite the court challenge and rescinding the original memo, the NSF has continued to comply with the executive order. They have not communicated with us at all and our paychecks are still canceled indefinitely. I know people who cannot pay their rent.

NSF PRFB fellows: talk to your POs and transfer the remaining year’s balance of salary and research funds by 5pm today!! Dm me if you want to join the prfb slack where fellows are sharing info with each other #nsf #nsfprfb

Looks like the following programs in #NSF BIO have been 'archived': BRC-BIO - new.nsf.gov/funding/oppo... BIO-LEAPS - new.nsf.gov/funding/oppo... PRFB - new.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

How does one get over the endless desk rejects and still have any hope and motivation to keep going? asking for a friend …🧪🐦

desk rejected after a month at Science. What a teaser!!! 😭

Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says “Henry Kissinger died.” Man says “Oh holy shit this rules. This is so great thank you so much. Fuck

Anybody on #geosky have a recommendation for a research methods book in GIS? Ideally one that is focused on either human geography, health geography, or maybe human-environment? It should have a slant toward GIS and quant work… I have two in this vein and I can’t stand either of them 😪

another day another desk reject 😭 🧪🐦

baby’s first qPCR primers 🧬 🧪 🐦

The rgdal package retirement really mess with my maps, because the alternatives are not compatible with ggmap at all ☹️ don’t love it when scripts written within the past 3 years are already not reproducible anymore. If any R geospatial wizards out there want to give me tips that’d be great!! 🧪
