Framed some new issues for the office wall!

Don’t forget, “Fear keeps us from acting. It keeps us from bringing about change because instead of facing the powerful who oppress we turn tail and run, cowering in our burrows, keeping our heads down.” interminablerambling.medium.com/we-must-act-...

Don’t put off speaking with people when you feel the urge. I kept thinking, over past two weeks, I need to call and talk to someone. Today, got a text message that they passed away. Don’t put off that urge.

Bitter Root is back!!! Pre Order NOW!

Today’s book is William Gardner Smith’s “The Stone Face,” a novel about an African American expatriate in France who starts a relationship with a Holocaust survivor from Poland and becomes friends with Algerian independence fighters. It ends with the 1961 Paris Massacre. @nyrb-imprints.bsky.social

We refuse to act because we are afraid. We fear what that cleaning will do to us and our position. We become selfish, denying others and ourselves freedom to be who we truly should be. @kevinmkruse.bsky.social @markhamillofficial.bsky.social @markanthonyneal.bsky.social tinyurl.com/2m7ejxzr

Several House Dems and I just had a press conference with families affected by Chris Carr’s lawsuit to try to eliminate Section 504 disability accommodations. Carr’s office has denied the lawsuit seeks to end 504 entirely, but it’s right there in the complaint. Carr should dismiss the lawsuit now.

Lillian Smith, James Baldwin, & Ernest Gaines each point out the ways that whites create the “problem” & must face themselves, asking themselves, “Why did I need to create this problem in the first place?” @markanthonyneal.bsky.social @profjeffries.bsky.social @jamellebouie.net tinyurl.com/mttshxyk

I love this, but seeing how safe it is to protest when not being black is wild demoralizing.

I rarely share things like this, but a colleague has been dealing with a lot over the last year. The death of a partner, a reoccurrence of cancer (requiring more surgery), and more. If you can help out, please do so. www.gofundme.com/f/support-dr...

"So many of us are sleepwalkers wandering around in search of a past that never existed; more afraid of ghosts than of atomic war, gazing backward at a Civil War fought a century ago instead of looking into the cold eye of the storm bearing down on us." Lillian Smith

I've been making some zines lately. Here is one I just finished. Thinking about a fascism in literature class. Not sure about specifically the US or not. Could do either way. @jeffsharlet.bsky.social

Today’s book for the current moment is Ann Petry’s “The Street,” a social protest and I’d say gothic novel detailing systems of racism and providing critiques of the American Dream. This is a copy I picked up in Norway a few years back for like &4. The title translates to “A Woman in Harlem.”

James Baldwin, Lillian Smith, & Ernest Gaines each pointedly called out white supremacy. Baldwin, in 1963, said, “You the white people invented [race], then you gotta find out why.” @americanstudier.bsky.social @kerileighmerritt.bsky.social @hcrichardson.bsky.social tinyurl.com/3n6wbkcw
