How I hope to spend #WorldBookDay

Everybody who works in advertising deserves to feel like they belong. All In is the industry’s initiative to improve inclusion & representation within UK advertising, powered by the All In Census. Mark 12th March in your diary to complete this year's - and find out more at advertisingallin.co.uk

Brits hate a bully

Updated version on ‘We are Canadian’. “Cheesy Poutine, not cheesy Putin”. 🤣

Today is World Book Day, when every child in the UK is provided with a voucher to buy books. In a world of digital distractions, this couldn't be more important. I was reminded of this lovely ad for Canadian retailer Indigo Books, which ran in 2006. #advertising #worldbookday

Alina Habbard posted: NOTHING CAN STOP THIS MAN FROM FIGHTING FOR HIS COUNTRY. David Simon had a succinct 2-word response: “Bone spurs.”

Ad for General Electric, 1978. Giant Screen TV with integrated VCR.

The only ad I felt could do #justice to this month's @exploreyourarchive.bsky.social theme was this one from 1960 where the actor James Robertson Justice gives his verdict on Frigidaire Refrigerators. #EYAJustice #advertising #archives #heritage #actors #acting

The British tabloids’ response to JD Vance’s disrespectful comments about the British military.

On National Handwriting Day (23rd Jan), Cheetos launched the Other Hand Font, the world’s first font created entirely by a designer’s 'Other Hand' (because their dominant hand is covered in bright orange Cheetos residue). You can download the font at Cheetos.com #advertising #cheetos

Terrific poster from Tesco.

Happy Pancake Day.

It's #PancakeDay ...what's the best topping? Personally I always go for traditional lemon & sugar or golden syrup as seen in this ad from 1969. Maybe some prefer more unique and unusual flavour combinations...let us know.

Happy Pancake Day! Shrove Tuesday is the last day before 40 days of Lent fasting, so was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats, hence pancakes. Jif Lemon juice, a British staple, has ‘owned’ this day since 1985 with the slogan "Don't forget the pancakes on Jif Lemon Day". #advertising

“Never Say No to Panda” was an Egyptian campaign created in 2010 for Panda Cheese, featuring a giant panda with anger management issues. Incredibly, the campaign was pulled after just one week when the Arab Dairy CEO got cold feet, and the marketing department was fired. #advertising

"If Roosevelt had told Churchill to sue for peace on any terms with Adolf Hitler and to fork over Britain’s coal reserves to the United States in exchange for no American security guarantees, it might have approximated what Trump did to Zelensky." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/o...

Possibly the greatest headline, and the worst restaurant review, I’ve ever read. In today’s Times Magazine.

Brutal.

Any psychologist or psychiatrist (or former abused spouse) will tell you that President Zelensky gave a master class today on how to deal with a malignant narcissist. He is an amazing man. We can all learn from him.

Did you know that the term “deadline” originated from a literal, physical line? In the American Civil War, prisoners were forced to remain within the confines of an actual line (often a fence). Cross the line, and chances are they were shot. Something I wrote... maverick-group.com/why-is-a-dea...

French TV channel Canal+ has made some incredible ads over the years, including the multi-award winning ‘The Bear’ and ‘The Closet’. This 2016 film, called ‘The Commentator’, is for Canal+ Sports, where “The sport never stops”. Agency was BETC Paris. #advertising

Nike returned to the recent Super Bowl after an absence of 27 years. It’s classic Nike, with terrific Led Zeppelin soundtrack. Interestingly though, the ad met with a surprising amount of criticism…from women, many arguing that it made Nike appear “inauthentic and desperate.” #advertising

Fascinating story - a movie goer in India sued the cinema (and won) for wasting his time with 25 minutes of pre-film advertising. I'm sure many see advertising as a waste of time these days...so should there be fewer ads, or just better ads? #advertising

Another ad for Philips Longer Life light bulbs from 1987. #advertising

Leo Burnett’s name is off the door of the agency. Would he have removed it himself? www.thedrum.com/opinion/2025... via @thedrum.bsky.social #advertising #agencies #heritage

Back in 2017, BBH enlisted Game of Thrones actor Kristian Nairn to promote KFC’s new Ricebox offering. In a recreation of his character Hodor’s iconic ‘Hold the door’ scene*, Nairn plays a KFC worker overwhelmed by a rush of customers asking for “chicken with fries”. #advertising

This 1987 ad for Philips Longer Life light bulbs is wonderful. Called ‘The Magic’s Gone’, it’s simple, beautifully cast and made me laugh out loud (maybe it’s because I’ve been married so long). No wonder it won a Clio award. #advertising

From Hitler’s brainchild to the world’s most popular car. This 1969 DDB ad for the VW Beetle celebrated the 20th anniversary of the car's US launch. #advertising

Remember when America had friends? Like a month ago?

Congratulations to Canada, whose Hockey team beat the United States 3-2 last night in the 4 Nations Championship final. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau later tweeted: “You can’t take our country - and you can’t take our game.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7tJ... #canada

Hey, I'd love a Babycham! Babycham was one of the most popular drinks in the 60s & 70s, but by the 1980s, sales had declined. In 1986, this new campaign aimed to re-energise both the brand's mage and sales. Saatchis originally proposed the catchline: “Babycham, so out that it’s in”. #advertising

Did you know that the second ad to ever appear on UK TV when it launched in 1955 was for Babycham? This bubbly drink was originally marketed as a ‘genuine champagne perry’, but quickly became known as ‘Baby Champ’. It was the first alcoholic drink targeted specifically at women. #advertising

This is the first ad for Microsoft Excel, where ‘typical’ execs perform a spreadsheet miracle in an elevator. Excel was originally released as Microsoft Multiplan, making an immediate impact (a 1985 review in MacUser Magazine called it “the Uzi submachine gun of the business world”). #advertising

What better way to kick-start your day than with this classic 1991 ad for Levis 501s. But what makes ‘Pool Hall’ special is that it gave The Clash their first and only No.1. The iconic punk band had never achieved commercial success. Then Levi’s came a-knocking. #advertising

New Zealand's new tourism campaign aimed at Australians, 'Everyone must go!' faces local backlash as the nation grapples with job cuts and emigration.

My newest political #cartoon concerns Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the dangerous, abusive, brain-damaged psychopath who as Secretary of Health and Human Services will now be an even more prolific #disease vector than he was before. #RFKJr #RichardScarry #Busytown #LowlyWorm #art #memes #politicalart

I’m loving the latest Axe/Lynx global campaign that just broke. Created by LOLA MullenLowe Madrid. Building on the success of its ‘The Power of Fragrance’ brand idea, we see how the irresistibly sweet fragrance can spark absurd jealousy. Here’s the third of three… #advertising
