Disappointing Mahler 9 from the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Seguin tonight. YNS’s reading was all surface drama, revealing little inner consciousness: just a collection of histrionic gestures, fussy phrasing and details, and coarse effects. He’d conduct a great Mahler 8.
