If you're unsure whether you're old or not, one way of knowing is if you remember being in a busy bar or club and being a pain because you wanted to pay by card.

Some #weeknotes from GDS's Service Standard & Service Manual team: More chats incoming from people working on service transformation as awareness rises that the Service Manual + Service Standard are powerful places to share good practice 1/2 #govdesign #gds

Popping up to London for an evening out is a cute idea until you get here, restaurant service is slow and expensive, then the trains are b0rked so it’s half midnight and you’re sat on the 23.35 train that hasn’t moved an inch in an hour and South Western Railway can’t say if you’ll get home tonight…

Alt text can be an artform in its own right.

Just done the Land Registry and One Login bits of signing a mortgage deed. Pretty slick and easy. The rest of the conveyancing process remains awful… if ever an online process would benefit from being nationalised, I think this would be close to the top of the list.

The amazing detail in this story is this lad's neighbour frantically whistling to try and draw the ship's attention to the dangerous local hazard known as [checks notes] Norway. If it hadn't noticed houses are generally stand on vessels a bit of whistling probably ain't going to do it, fella.

Of the things that annoy me at work, the double-pronged 'people who use presentation decks for strategy docs' and 'people who use strategy docs as presentation decks' is about the most annoying. Densely packed text in a slide format is rubbish for both of those things, please stop.

“We start by acknowledging that #WCAG is a starting point. Not a finish line. It’s not the gold standard of #accessibility, it’s the minimum standard. It’s useful, but it’s not complete.” — great, on-point piece by Charliiparker medium.com/@charliipark...

Niche bugbear: I find images in email signatures really annoying. They often end up as pointless attachments, they don't actually add anything of value, and they're effectively clutter.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked, "If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?" Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

Sibs is a small charity working to raise awareness of the needs of siblings of disabled children and adults throughout the year. We would love your help to keep funding our work. Donate here www.sibs.org.uk/donate #NationalSiblingsDay2025 #ItsaSiblingThing

It's #NationalSiblingsDay2025 and this fab video from @sibs.org.uk explains why that's important. If you've got a disabled brother or sister, or know someone else who does, please take a look, share far and wide, and help raise awareness of the work Sibs does to support this underrepresented group.

Amelia is 5. She misses out on activities she enjoys because they upset her autistic brother Jacob. Read Amelia’s story www.sibs.org.uk/amelia

Tender stem broccoli is a downright lie.

Watching Newsnight, I can only imagine sausages are made differently in the USA…

Sibs patron Jo Whiley shared this important message at our parliamentary event yesterday. Watch more here: youtu.be/H2hEfo_9dJc

A food hall is being shut down to make way for 900 flats. It led someone to declare “London is finished as a nice place to live for anyone who isn’t ultra rich”. But…the food hall actually *supports* the plans. What gives? capx.co/nimby-watch-...

We had the enormous privilege yesterday to share sibling voices with MPs. Thank you to @chelfulhamben.bsky.social for hosting and to @eddavey.libdems.org.uk for a powerful keynote speech. And to our incredible sibling speakers - you were beyond brilliant. #NationalSiblingsDay2025

“‘innovation’ evokes a search for novel solutions (robots, lasers, AI), when what we really need is mostly just hard work focused on a stable set of targets and applied for a long enough period of time.” 🎯🎯🎯

This was a brilliant event, a real coup for a charity punching way above its weight. Impactful talks from Clare our amazing CEO, and hard hitting real, personal stories from sibling guest speakers. Amazing effort from the Sibs crew and I was very proud to be a small part of it.

I think GovWifi is a pretty under-appreciated success in digital government. The ability for civil servants to easily get on the wifi in different buildings is super useful (plus open to the public). It's even available internationally in embassies! joelanman.com/projects/gov...
