Budgets are statements of values. And what we're seeing is that House Republicans value ripping food and health care away from millions of Americans in order to partly pay for tax cuts for the rich.

This is a bad bill. Yes, families need access to affordable child care, and we need to do something to increase supply in many communities. But this must not be done at the expense of safety - some regulations are actually good and necessary! Thanks to @ehaspel.bsky.social for highlighting this.

Have questions about child care policy in the U.S.? This new resource page from @americanprogress.bsky.social's Early Ed team breaks down answers to your questions and explains why robust public investments in child care must be part of the solution. www.americanprogress.org/article/unde...

Interesting data in light of current events. More about welfare queen Elon Musk: www.profgalloway.com/elon-musk-we...

1/ One thing I can say with 20+ years of experience on this, is that the MSM (a term I hate but) is incredibly slow to cover protests and to understand what they signify.

Yesterday ~68 people employed in HHS's Administration for Children & Families early childhood offices were terminated. I'm told Office of Head Start lost ~20% of staff; Office of Child Care lost ~25% These workers process grants for preschools/childcare centers, monitor health/safety issues, etc.

Infurtiating to read about billionaires scared of retribution. If with their resources they can’t stand up to this administration, what hope do we have?! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/u...

The continued difficulties with restoring Head Start funding is an attack on the most vulnerable families in America. @emmarjanssen.bsky.social talked to some providers on the pain of the past couple weeks, even after the courts said all funding must flow: prospect.org/health/2025-...

It goes without saying, but if you see the need to access any data about American education from the federal government, you should go download it now. Like stop reading this post and do it immediately.

They are following the Project 2025 playbook. I fear what will happen to Head Start next given the way things are going. www.npr.org/2025/02/10/n...

There has to be a huge backlash coming in response to all this. Surely.

@schumer.senate.gov @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social What are you doing about this? Musk and his cronies are causing REAL and immediate damage, that is going to take years to undo. The time for action is NOW!

An incredible effort by my @americanprogress.bsky.social colleagues Kennedy Andara and Mimla Wardak for this resource — a table of people by state who participate in different government services. This is who is impacted by Trump's funding freeze: www.americanprogress.org/article/the-...

This is the shit that drives me crazy. Even if you believe USAID is as bad as Elmo and his friends say, there is no need to do this so quickly, without proper procedures in place to support the people impacted by these rapid decisions.

More of this!

Even if you buy what Rubio is selling here - that State will continue with the important functions of USAID, why do it in this way? Why not actually set up a plan for this transition so that the vital services USAID provides around the world continue uninterrupted?? 😡 www.cnn.com/2025/02/03/p...

This is maddening. How is Elon Musk allowed to do this to the government agencies?! Where are our elected officials from the CO-EQUAL branches of government to stop this?? @schumer.senate.gov @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social

This is what Trump’s cruelty and chaos has unleashed.

Argh! Stop rolling over and just giving the bully your lunch money!!

BREAKING: Trump’s holding our tax dollars hostage right now to bully federal agencies into doing the bidding of his billionaire donors. This is cruel and illegal. Tell your members of Congress to fight back: childcareforeveryfamily.org/action

This is awful. Even if the WH was not intending for this to happen (unlikely) the incompetence of the administration leads to real world consequences like this.

WIC. They are pausing WIC. That's the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Last time I checked (a while ago), every dollar spent on WIC produced over a dollar in savings *in the same fiscal year.* For most people, though, feeding infants and mothers is enough.

Republicans must never again be allowed to run as the party of law and order.

Week 2 starting out just as awful as week 1. What a shit show this country has voted in.

🚨Egg prices hit an ALL-TIME high on Trump's third day in office. Actions he's taken to lower prices this week? ZERO newrepublic.com/post/190592/...

Fascinating and terrifying. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Shameful that this felon got elected. "...but for Mr. Trump’s election and imminent return to the Presidency, the Office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial.” www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

The capitulation to the incoming administration and the post-fact world is deeply concerning and depressing in equal measure.

This is, or should be, a big deal -- Ann Telnaes, an absolute legend, quitting WaPo due to censorship of a cartoon criticizing billionaires anntelnaes.substack.com/p/why-im-qui...

The world's richest man managed to take $190 million away from a *child cancer research center* with his posts yesterday. Funding now stripped in the new bill.

Me, a public health person, just sitting over here reflecting on the fact that the US has experienced a 7% increase in infant mortality post-Dobbs. Like, do you realize what that says about this society from an ethical perspective? That we made policy choices that caused this? #PHEthx

“Would I like to work full-time? Oh absolutely, if child care wasn’t an issue… I did the math and it just doesn’t work.” www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

It's possible I took the 'candy' theme for my daughter's birthday cake a little too far...

This is very good
