Nature research paper: Latitudinal scaling of aggregation with abundance and coexistence in forests https://go.nature.com/3CUTWWg

You know that problem people worry about, where new AI ends up training on the output of old AI, creating an unholy ouroboros of unchecked slop? It's already happening.

During WWII, four brothers from the same Jewish family signed up to fight against the Nazis. Only one of the four brothers survived. His grandson is the current President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. Slava Ukraine! Heroyam Slava! 💙💛

Hi @royalsociety.org I don’t think Elon Musk can remain a Fellow of the Royal Society given he is actively and deliberately shrinking the science base of the US.

Move fast and make things up. A great thread:

A simple shift from "I told you so" to "I was scared this would happen" is an opening. Follow that up with, "how can I help" and links and numbers to immigrant rights orgs, labor orgs, and community health and you are, in fact, building solidarity.

In a world of increasing disinformation -- where governments and Big Tech are now leading sources of nonsense -- we need to listen to independent truth-tellers and experts. Bluesky is a great place to find them. Here's a starter pack of folks I'd recommend in climate. go.bsky.app/Q4Uo8vV

Feels like a way to make sense of the US today, “… this is a government of the radicalised online right, for the radicalised online right, by the radicalised online right. It’s government by Breitbart.”

Unreal. The US government is dumping Asian and African families and children in random countries that they have no connection to. Dumping, not "deporting." Deportation implies the return of a person to their home country. This is treating people like toxic waste. www.cbsnews.com/news/us-depo...

CDC source: “We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff. They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

Extremely important paper on net zero. This paper also elegantly shows that protecting natural carbon sinks is imperative, and how those with the highest historical cumulative emissions are most reliant on their continued existence to reach net zero (and so should pay for their protection).

The 'feeling' that X under Musk is a different place than before is quantified in this new study titled 'Substantial Hate' 1️⃣ hate speech up to 50% higher; 2️⃣ hate speech increase persistent; 3️⃣ no reduction in inauthentic accounts #commsky @polcomm.bsky.social journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

Quote of the day: “The road to the authoritarian state is lined with people who advise you not to exaggerate”

Elegant paper showing commodity imports in wealthy countries driving forest loss and species loss in tropical countries.

A new study published in the Lancet finds that life expectancy in Gaza dropped by nearly half, from 75.5 years to 40.6 years, during the first twelve months of the genocide. Apocalyptic.

On #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience let me remind you that we are NOWHERE NEAR parity. A few examples. 1. Women are credited less in science than men. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I hadn’t understood there was a difference. cc @ymalhi.bsky.social

Can I please ask anyone working or studying with a young and budding fascist to try and do something about that now, instead of giving a sorrowful interview to camera twenty years later saying “I knew fully well who they were but didn’t say anything”

Saturday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the *lowest* on record (JAXA data) • about 640,000 km² below the 2010s mean • about 1,280,000 km² below the 2000s mean • about 1,850,000 km² below the 1990s mean • about 2,290,000 km² below the 1980s mean Plots: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...

Here's a valuable round-up of why Heathrow runway 3 is incompatible with UK climate targets, from @richsulley.bsky.social

➡️ January 20: FAA director fired ➡️ January 21: Air Traffic Controller hiring frozen ➡️ January 22: Aviation Safety Advisory Committee disbanded ➡️ January 28: Buyout/retirement demand sent to existing employees ➡️ January 29: First American mid-air collision in 16 years Making America Great Again!

As we in the UK know from the Rwanda deportation scheme, performative cruelty is expensive.

MASS PROTEST PLANNED OVER JAILING OF BIG OIL’S OPPONENTS Met police threatens ‘swift action’ Today, an extraordinary mass appeal begins at the Court of Appeal concerning the jailing of 16 supporters of Just Stop Oil for a combined total of 41 years. PR: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Earth, climate, and planetary scientists: If you have an expected upcoming NASA/NSF/NOAA/DOE grant payment in the next couple weeks that, if not received, will have a real impact on your lab and staff, please let us know about it @science.org. You can reach me at [email protected].

To our many American friends. The National Academies have assembled a package of resources for researchers facing threats or attacks in the US www.nationalacademies.org/chr/resource...

I appreciate all the people recommending the Shock Doctrine. I've been thinking about what makes Trump's use of these tactics a little different. In recent decades, shock tactics were used mainly to rapidly impose neoliberal economic policies. But what Trump is doing goes way beyond that. a 🧵

Nature not so red in tooth and claw!

Scientists -- I'm looking to talk to researchers about how all this uncertainty around paused grant reviews and a potentially massive freeze on federal funding is affecting you and your research plans. DM, email or reach out on signal.

Interested in tropical peatlands? On 17-18 February, we have the first ever scientific conference on African peatlands, at the Royal Society in London. Free to attend+streamed online (w/ French subtitles). Register here: https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2025/02/african-peatlands/

For those in / around Leeds UK, I have two jobs as part of my team for French speakers, Bilingual Project Manager, and Bilingual Admin and Communications Assistant. To manage a new large project, the Congo Basin Science Initiative. Deadline today (sorry!). https://jobs.leeds.ac.uk/ENVGE1259

With wonder for colleagues from Central Africa I’m co-leading the Congo Basin Science Initiative to drive investment into understanding the worlds second largest expanse of tropical forest. We have 30 PhD and MSc fully funded scholarships, details here: https://congobasinscience.net/scholarships/

I cannot recommend this book enough if you, too, are floundering for how to do something, anything, but have never and don’t consider yourself “good” at things like this @roderickstruth.bsky.social wrote the best book I’ve read in a long while.

Just out: Solar power additions in China in 2024 exceeded expectations, again, with a whopping 277 GW installed in just one year! This was up 28% on the already towering 217 GW added in 2023. Wind power made a new record as well, with 79 GW added to the grid, up 5% on year.

Wrote this in another place on 6 November and thought it worth sharing here today. Just a note to remember that fascists are scared of you.

All I'm saying, @royalsociety.org, is that your one of your Fellows giving Nazi salutes is never going to be a good look for you.

The rules, if you are keeping track: If a single left activist anywhere in the world says "defund the police," it becomes the official position of the Democratic Party, now and forever. If the president's top surrogate repeatedly sieg-heils on stage, it's ambiguous, impossible to interpret.

"Who pays the price for climate destruction around the globe? Not the fossil fuel industry pocketing profits and taxpayer subsidies as their products wreak havoc. Everyday people suffer, with their lives and livelihoods," says UN SG Antonio Guterres 1/3

Here's the thing. Our world will heat up, and the climate break down, until after we phase out fossil fuels and create an effective zero-emissions economy. If we give up on that fight when we cross 1.5, or any target, then we give up on saving whatever will be left. Never give up.

I see that Labour’s policy of ‘alienate everyone’ is going well. Banning the re-introduction of beavers, because it was Tory policy. Really?

Scientists are expected to do peer reviewing but no one tells you HOW. After talking with several folks about this today at #AGU24 , it seems a good time to link to this presentation I made several years ago -- feel free to use/share! docs.google.com/presentation...

All innocent.
