I did not expect the magnitude of this conversion

Arguably, Tokyo is too hot in summer for this already😭 mainichi.jp/english/arti...

To me the core tenet of a conspiracy theory is this foundational paradox: the absence of evidence supporting the conspiracy is treated as evidence of the conspiracy. It allows you to say whatever you want - exactly like the weirdo in the comments is doing.

Wow. Good for him. I am pro assisted dying, but it must not become a fig leaf for institutional failing (see: Canada) www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/o...

I just attended a conference in the US. We had one speaker detained and two others turned away at the border.

And remember, if they're rich/white they're expats, if not they're immigrants

“It would seem that the only way Miller [the man who was banned] would even end up on MSG’s radar is if someone was scraping social media, keeping tabs on voices critical of Dolan, and putting them in the system to keep them out of future events.”

It's kind of unjust that in a bad journal the journal is clearly responsible when publishing bad research, but a journal can also contribute nothing and still publish good research simply because people external to the journal (submitters/reviewers) are doing a good job & the journal gets the clout

Can't believe I used to be interested in what zeynep tufekci had to say. Now she writes like just another conspiracist. Even if she happened to be right, the transparently manipulative way she writes defies any trust you could have in the writing.

A small apartment, and counseling with no preconditions This is powerful.

First the rumour was a 20% budget cut. Then, 50%. Now the president's NASA budget is out and it's a 68% cut to astrophysics ($1.5B to $487M). Even if this gets reversed in four years, we will *never* recover the missions, partners, people who will be gone. www.washingtonpost.com/science/2025...

This is DEVASTATING

Our rising seas. This is only going to get harder to ignore. This NASA visualization was created by svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5520/

There’s many reasons why we (ecologists, conservation biologists) are pissed about the GMO gray wolves.

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but 2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but 3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So 4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

no lies detected. #civilrights

NEW: Entire scientific fields have been wiped out by the nearly 800 grants cancelled at NIH, finds a @nature.com analysis of the unprecedented cuts. About half of all 2024 NIH projects related to LGBT+ health or vaccine hesitancy — gone. See the other topics and US states hardest hit here:

tbh, the AI industry is full of fraud, and fraudsters like this techcrunch.com/2025/04/10/f...

I took it as fact that new growth is thinner than old growth. But in this pic of my raspberry bush, the thin brown twig is last year's growth. The thick green growth wasn't there 3 weeks ago...

Complexity Digest has officially stopped posting on Twitter, with Bluesky becoming its primary social media channel. I encourage you to follow the @cxdig.bsky.social account to keep getting awesome content about #complexsystems, #networkscience, #alife, and more in your feedback!

so happy to have @restingdinoface.bsky.social's take on the "dire wolves" in Slate slate.com/technology/2...

I forgot I made this for my thesis, more writing projects should have stat blocks.

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

TIL Ginkgo supposedly comes from japanese. The tree is called icho いちょう 銀杏, the fruit ginnan 銀杏 ... so where does ginkgo come from? Ginnan - 銀杏, (mis?)read ginkyo, mistyped ginkgo apparently... Yes, that's 3 readings for the same 銀杏

From Max Miller's newsletter. People are making "history" accounts that are entirely run by chatGPT &co, spreading lies that readers propagate to the point of 'correcting' genuine facts with AI nonsense.

I see we’re doing deextinction discourse again, I’ll bite! Genotypes (DNA variation) alone do not make a phenotype (how bodies look, function, behave). Even if we reproduced an extinct genome, that animal doesn’t necessarily have the developmental context and learned culture of the extinct species

A little while ago I bought something entirely frivolous. Probably the coolest thing I own now.

This is a big deal. Spread the word. But it’s tiny compared to the totality of what’s happening at NIH. Cure Research for all cancers, Alzheimer’s, everything is being gutted. Intentionally. It’s all getting burned to the ground but the news isn’t getting out. The new cures won’t be there for you.

The Embodied Intelligence conference embodied-intelligence.org starts tomorrow. Looking forward to re/connecting with old/new friends and colleagues.
