It's difficult to understand the psalms of lament & imprecation, the yearning for justice if you have not lived outside of societal favor, privilege, and power. The cries of the victims on the margins are just abstractions. For those suffering injustice, the psalms are the cries of the heart.

American Christians struggle to read Scripture and see anyone other than themselves as the heroes & the righteous in the text. They ignore millennia of history, thousands of miles of geography, and entirely different socio-cultural norms. They cannot fathom being Egypt, Babylon, or Rome.
