Just added a new member to my family: Eris. 😍

#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld runs into the issue of feeling like generic, toothless television. My review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/cap...

Nothing brave about #CaptainAmerica / #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld . A flat political thriller with scattershot emotional stakes, recycled plot points, & a disengaging path forward. Another forgettable villain.

Every so often, a movie comes along that shatters your heart while trying ever so delicately to piece it back together. #AllThatsLeftOfYou is one such film. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/all...

#TheMonkey: Osgood Perkins leans heavily into a mixed bag of humor and horror, where the film struggles to break free from its one-note slump. My review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/the...

#DidntDie is a tangled tonal patchwork that struggles to mold its intriguing concept into a cohesive and compelling narrative. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/did...

#Middletown delves into 1990s-era amateur journalism and its lasting impact on a community, viewed through a riveting and commanding present-day lens. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/mid...

#TheVirginOfTheQuarryLake: There are plenty of thrills bubbling under the surface to keep you on the edge of your seat, but the film eventually renders flat. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/the...

#WhereTheWindComesFrom doesn’t tread new ground, although it does satisfy as a cathartic indie dramedy with sparks of charm. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/whe...

#SabarBonda/#CactusPears subverts loss and grief as the point where queer love can unexpectedly grow, rather than where it may lead. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/sab...

#ThirdAct: The greatest moments of emotional sincerity come when Tadashi shares the frame with his father and allows their flourishing bond to speak for itself. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/thi...

#RainsOverBabel: Gala del Sol has an inspired, scrappy vision that momentarily radiates before its myriad of narratives begin to collapse. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/rai...

#GEN_: The robust authenticity fuels this intersection between fertility and gender identity, even if the constantly shifting narratives sacrifice depth. My #Sundance review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/gen...

#DJAhmet has hints of tenderness scattered throughout an otherwise familiar tale of adolescence that lacks conviction. My #Sundance2025 review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/dj-...

#TheMonkey is Osgood Perkins’ lightest film yet, despite the heavy helping of gory monkey business. Genuinely funny when the comedy lands, but its dramatic underpinnings fall short.

Now seated for #TheMonkey.

EMILIA PÉREZ being anywhere in the awards conversation (let alone win) will forever bewilder me.

First workout of 2025 done!

I had to remind myself at least 10 times today that it isn’t Monday. Mid-week holidays really screw with my sense of time. 😵‍💫

#DieBleierneZeit/#MarianneAndJuliane is a stunning and textured look at activism, sisterhood, and conviction. A welcome surprise in how it navigates the relationships caught in the crossfire and the evolution of its central one. Jutta Lampe is phenomenal.

Now watching: Die Bleierne Zeit (Marianne and Juliane) (1981).

When you get the Christmas gift of being able to rep your favorite horror film of all time. 💀

Merry Christmas, everybody!

#BetterMan/#BetterManMovie works far better than expected. Rather than trying to reinvent the music biopic wheel, Michael Gracey changes the lens through which we see it with surprising success. My review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/bet...

#AtlanticCity is an absorbing romantic crime flick that progressively inflates with nuance and intrigue. Louis Malle approaches drugs & danger with lots of character and flavor. Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon turn in great performances.

Now watching: Atlantic City (1980).

#TheRoomNextDoor candidly speaks to love and death in many forms, although its scattershot emotions don’t always connect as they should. My review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/the...

It's that time of year again! My top 20 best movies of 2024 via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/jef...

Looks good to me.

When the Christmas lighting is giving SUSPIRIA.

#LOTR: #TheWarOfTheRohirrim stretches itself thin for lore that feels like a footnote without breathing enough life into the characters and stakes to make the war impactful. My review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/the...

I always see people meme Thanskgiving for the family drama that comes with it. That has become the entire duration between Thanksgiving and Christmas for me.

Just watched #TheRickshawMan for the first time and I could watch ToshirĂ´ Mifune in that drum scene all day long.

Two films from 2024 that make a perfect double feature. No explanations.

Similar to PATHER PANCHALI, #Aparajito is lethargic & difficult to attach to. The cinematography and direction are filled with care, but the narrative of a poverty-stricken journey to manhood leaves much to be desired. This trilogy just isn’t for me.

Returning back to watching the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion winners. Now watching: Aparajito (1956).

I didn’t care much for WICKED, but I understand why most folks love it. Now, awarding that film for directing or cinematography is something that baffles me.

#Nightbitch plays its outlandish premise far too safe, seemingly too afraid to fully embrace itself. My review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/nig...

#LOTR: #TheWarOfTheRohirrim sports robust 2D animation, but the story doesn’t justify the runtime. The action is well choreographed in an otherwise weightless battle with a lead character that deserves far more depth.

#Nosferatu conjures a frightening Gothic horror nightmare soaked in macabre grandeur. My review via @guyatthemovies.bsky.social: www.guyatthemovies.com/gatmhome/nos...

I can’t even begin to explain the pure joy I feel no longer being forced to attend Thanksgiving with extended family.

I’m at the grocery store picking up a few final things for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Everyone looks just as miserable as I am to be here at 11PM.

#HardTruths is uncomfortable, funny, and remarkably honest. Marianne Jean-Baptiste gives an astonishingly raw performance. Mike Leigh’s direction gets a little stagey, but there’s an emotional power in this story about the festering grasp of grief & resentment.

Now watching: Hard Truths (2024).

#NickelBoys is a bold portrait of friendship, love, and the pursuit of justice. RaMell Ross’ tender direction & Jomo Fray’s poetic cinematography make for a unique cinematic experiment. But, the immersive POV alternates between deeply affecting & emotionally dampening.

I need this poster of #TheUmbrellasOfCherbourg without text for my phone background IMMEDIATELY.
