For #FlyDay - the aptly named Peacock Fly (Callopistromyia annulipes) struttin their stuff! #becurious #inverts

For #PhycologyFriday, here’s a big pebbly mudflat of rockweed (Fucus distichus) mixed with what I believe is yet-to-bud Glasswort (Salicornia) that I saw this week visiting Ma’amtagila territory in northern Vancouver Island. Both are common species, but this seemed like an unusual habitat/growth!

More sourdough discard crackers! Using a round pastry cutter for the shapes. Added ingredients this time: Wakame seaweed, 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast, fresh chives, parmesan and chilli. I used mostly strong white flour plus some spelt and rye. #sourdough #crackers #baking #wakame #seaweed

Returning home after an amazing field trip to Goa with Rui Seabra, Fraddry D’Souza and Lalat Hindu. We deployed temperature sensors from @electricbluecrl.bsky.social and conducted biodiversity surveys. @coastalwarming.bsky.social

#PhycologyFriday, look at my beautiful dried Ascophyllum nodosum with the epiphytic Vertebrata lanosa. Not my work, but now hanging in my office. I can mention that Vertebrata lanosa is sold for thousands of kroner per kg.

When Nature does a photo roundup, it’s always worth a scroll. March’s edition is packed with mind-blowing REAL shots that capture the beauty, weirdness, and wonder of science 🧪—no AI needed. Case in point: this gorgeous shot of two courting crab spiders. Just one of many stunners. 💘

#OceanOpportunities PostDoc position: Seaweed aquaculture and ecosystem services - Deadline 09 April 2025 nf-pogo-alumni.org/03042025-5/

Seaweed and other stuff from the beach - if anyone knows which species of Laver (Porphyra) it is, I’d like to know as I can’t tell the difference! Will be either Winter or Purple, I think. It was on rocks just below high tide line. Added some photos if that helps. Hartlepool, NEEngland. #nature 🐡

An album of over 200 pressed seaweeds collected by an anonymous Victorian collector. A transcribed poem is pasted as title page, it begins: "Oh call us not weeds, we are flowers of the sea." I saw this at UW-Madison Special Collections 🌊📚 CA 19285 #seaweed #herbarium #naturalhistory

Dead man’s fingers & live man’s fingers. This seaweed is rad because it is “coenocytic;” the entire individual is one, single, multinucleate cell. #Codium #Seaweed #MarineLife 🦑🌊

"The researchers found that the presence of microplastics ... can reduce photosynthesis by as much as 7 to 12 percent, on average. That could range from 6 to 18 percent in terrestrial crops, 2 to 12 percent in marine plants such as seaweed and 4 to 14 percent in freshwater algae."

Curr. Biol. (2025) 10.1016/j.cub.2024.12.025  Kelp forests are integral + critical to aquatic ecosystems, but species such as giant kelp + bull kelp have experienced population bottlenecks in recent decades.
