ooh we're playing the "who was the Beloved Disciple?" game?! I actually like the idea that it's Lazarus (BD doesn't show up until after the raising; Lazarus is described as "the one [Jesus] loved") but I also love the "surprise, the beloved disciples is ME, your author!" at the end of John's gospel

In a less imperfect world, Musk and Trump would be forever cast as killers of children, and this would be front-page news for months and the subject of Sunday sermons in every church.

Someone in my new house appreciates silliness

in happier news, I'm deaconing for the first time in North America this morning, at my dear friend's thanksgiving mass (his first as a priest at the parish where he served as deacon), and I had one packet left of what had become my traditional pre-deaconing breakfast in the Philippines 😁

this weather is staggeringly incorrect for both the place I currently am (Boston) and the place I previously was (Manila) and Google offers no way to tell where it *thinks* I am nor any way to change it. this is the company that people say leads the world in UX

all public televisions should, at least as an option, be playing Columbo. Narita Airport has figured this out; the rest of us just need to catch up

Starting ~24 hours of travel that will culminate in one of my favorite things: a flight that lands before it takes off. Looking forward to being a time-traveler again! (I was a time traveler for years from the first time I circumnavigated, but undid it by going the opposite way the second time.)

The big subtext: It's low-grade unusual for Catholic bishops to do sign-on letters with other traditions, but high-grade unusual for a *group* of bishops (as opposed to individual prelates) to do so in a way that pushes beyond what the USCCB has done, much less on the same day!

OH SHIIIIiiiiiiiii this is gonna be ideal for my “stay awake for the entire flight from Tokyo to Boston in a daft effort to get on Eastern Time ASAP” plan

I know that folks on Bluesky know this but it is always worth pointing out that there is no Radical Left (or really even a Far Left) in American politics. Even our alleged poster children for such movements would be classified as center left by most of the world.

amazing q&a with paul krugman

When this question comes up, or occasionally just when a social media thing of mine breaks containment, I get folks jumping in to be like "we have science now; don't need religion!" I think there's a misconception that I believe in God so that I have an explanation for the seasons or something?

only a few hills I would die on here, and I can't shake the feeling there is SOMETHING I am forgetting that I will kick myself for later

Maybe seems a little facile but. Mamdani’s genuine smile beaming out at me from a hundred instagram reels was truly fun and joyous to experience. And we all needed a little joy. Give the people what they want, and start enjoying giving it to them

I went to a barcade in London and bought 36 tokens for 20 pounds. These "tokens" turned out to be American quarters and I have never felt so owned. Essentially I gave them $27 and got $9 back

THE BOOK OF NOTABLE SANDWICHES

tiny+dumb victory: when @thesecondjqm.bsky.social visited Manila for my ordination in October, he came with a stash of the deodorant I like that I ordered to his American address. He was a bit dubious at the number. Today, five days before I go back to the US, I opened the last one. NAILED THE COUNT

Literally begging you to post about Just Some Stuff. We will see the news I absolutely promise. Twenty people will repost the same exact thing about the news. Only you can post about a turtle you saw

I know I'm not the only one who feels a twinge of guilt when I post a "look at this cool place" or some joke about Star Trek, like how will this look alongside stories about Gaza and LA and trans rights and all?

congratulations to @captainacab.airbud.website on the incredible posters milestone of being quoted in a federal indictment 🏆

Michael Pham fled Vietnam at the age of 13. He was named bishop of San Diego a month ago. Today, he stood watch at a courthouse: ICE agents were “standing there covered with masks as we walked toward the courtroom. Eventually the agents scattered and went away” timesofsandiego.com/life/2025/06...

I frequently tell the story of Rep. Walter Jones of North Carolina. He coined the term "freedom fries." But he came to regret his vote for Iraq and sent letters to the families of every dead servicemember. Harry Reid later said he had only one reget: his vote for the Iraq War.

Zohran Mamdami is going to make Unsleeping City real

Many years later, as he faced the editorial board, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani was to remember that distant afternoon when his father told him to abolish ICE

“…artificial intelligence [poses] challenges to human dignity, justice, and labor.’” He’s from Chicago. Of course he’s a union guy. techcrunch.com/2025/06/18/p...

you think your cause just? then why is it my leitmotif now plays at the pivotal moment where our ideologies clash?
