Read & sign the Statement on the 2025 ESIL Annual Conference at FU Berlin. It addresses the recent disinvitation of Francesca Albanese at FU Berlin, self-censorship, and academic freedom. Despite the ESIL President’s attempt to diffuse its impact, it is crucial to show support by signing.

Academic freedom lies at the heart of our profession and we must protect it at all costs. In consultation with colleagues, we have tried to articulate widespread concerns with respect to the upcoming ESIL conference in Berlin, in light of recent events.

US references to the ‘rules-based order’ have long served to cherry-pick norms favorable to its interests, sidelining broader international law. With the latest Trump moves, is this still about selectively bending rules, or a wholesale rejection of any constraint? www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Glad to see a letter by my dear colleague Alexandra Hofer published on @theguardian.com today, responding to the French minister of foreign affairs and explaining why their policies re. cooperation with the ICC embody double standards www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

In case you missed it - an excellent piece by Eyal Benvenisti in @justsecurity.org on the prospects for int'l law in the face of Trump's policies - depressing conclusions for the short term, but somewhat heartening for the long view:

#ICC prosecutor asks for the court to make a finding of “non-compliance” regarding Italy’s arrest and release of #Libya’s Almasri Njeem “Italy’s noncompliance was particularly grave”, and should be referred to the #UN Security Council, or Assembly of States Parties.

#ICC’s OTP makes strongly worded legal arguments: even if the issues that #Italy blamed for its failure were a factor, it had an obligation to consult the court. The timeline of events, however, is #REDACTED

Wow

The #ICC "invites" #Italy to explain itself re: the arrest & subsequent release without charge of Osama Elmasry ('Almasri Njeem') last month. Njeem is wanted on suspicion of crimes against humanity & war crimes, committed in a prison in Tripoli, #Libya, from 2015. www.icc-cpi.int/sites/defaul...

On my reading list, top of it!

Our call for papers for the pre-conference workshop in Berlin prior to the start of ESIL2025 is out now! The workshop will be held on 11 September 2025 and the deadline for abstracts is 1 April 2025. esil-sedi.eu/wp-content/u...

Super interesting call!

Excellent critique by @jannenijman.bsky.social of ca. 2025 "Let's Buy #Greenland" exhortations, plus deep contextualization through account of #PredatoryCapitalism which put Manhattan into Dutch empire ca. 1625 @ejiltalk.bsky.social

Well, Donald Trump has, in my view, managed to rack up an Article 70 Rome Statute offense (offense against the administration of justice) in less than a month of his presidency. He might soon find himself under an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court.

Today the #ICC disagreed Mokom's treatment amounted to "detention" "The option to leave the hotel & [REDACTED] – undesirable as it may have been for Mr Mokom – was always available" ('undesirable' [REDACTED] here may be the life sentence w/ hard labour Mokom would have faced returning to #CAR?)

The warrant for #Kony was issued in 2005. These 2025 absent-hearings were argued for, in part, due to his long flight from justice. But the #ICC faces, now, a glut of potentially unfulfillable warrants: from #Russia & #Israel to #Afghanistan An Appeal Chamber decision could cast a long shadow.

An incredibly disappointing day for @tilburg-university.bsky.social as the University Board ignores its own experts, who advised that TiU suspend ties with Israeli partner universities due to the heightened risk of their participation in HR violations and failure to ensure academic freedom.

ICJ President Sebutinde has been credibly accused of plagiarism, and the source is stunning: Douglas Feith was US Under Secretary of Defense and key architect of the illegal 2003 Iraq War. His career is defined by opposition to international law & it is unbefitting that any ICJ judge would cite him
