Hello #histmed folks. Do you have any recommendations for literature on the history of drug user activism and overdose/death in a European context? Alex Mold and Virginia Berridge's work is on the list, but non-UK and especially Eastern European references would be very welcome!

In "The Product of Medicine," @caitjan.bsky.social retells the story of US medical history through the lens of industrialization and the industrial logics that made American medicine modern. Read the intro for free on our website now. #USHistory #TechnologyStudies https://buff.ly/3WWE3VT

From an idea in 2008 to a book in 2025, ECHOES OF CARE: DEAFNESS IN MODERN BRITAIN has been published by @mcgillqueensup.bsky.social ! It explores how changing perceptions of deafness intersected with healthcare, disability, and eugenics in 19th-century Britain. www.mqup.ca/echoes-of-ca...

"Examining the uncertain endings of epidemics in the past and present, from polio to mpox, underscores the need to rethink global health interventions in temporal terms. ... For the past has not ended; it endures, sounding in the voice of lived experience that is asking to be heard."

This morning I taught on the history of AIDS and its 'birth certificate' in the 1981 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. This week the #MMWR has not been published for the first time since 1952. Unhinged executive order vandalism with terrifying implications for trust in epidemiological info.

"We live in a social world that is fundamentally structured around the idea that sex is a binary, biological truth. Scientists are therefore constantly conditioned to ignore anomalies that do not fit into that scheme." Very insightful essay by Beans Velocci. www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

"The history of medicine offers an antidote to the notion that we are simply looking at 'nature' when we see sex and gender: what counts as sex and gender is historically changeable, morally infused, and politically loaded." www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

Herwig Czech put forward an extended study of Hans Asperger's entanglement with the Nazi medical regime. It is a highly nuanced account of his involvement in child murders at the notorious 'death' ward 'Am Spiegelgrund' in Vienna based on previously neglected documents and medical expertise.
