The California countryside has a problem now where if you smell woodsmoke, is it the comforting aroma of a cozy woodfire on a crisp winter eve? Or the lingering miasma from other humans’ homes and livelihoods being traumatically burnt to ash? Sadly, these days I think it’s more the latter.
