Pls share: I'm seeking ornithologists willing to comment about how the Bird Banding Lab &/or Breeding Bird Survey are crucial to their research & conservation efforts, for a piece for @therevelator.org defending these programs. Reply, DM, or email me at rebecca dot heisman at gmail. #ornithology

More details coming soon, but mark your calendars ... Breakout meeting for @systbiol.bsky.social‬ The Society of Systematic Biologists - will be Jan 9-11 in Baton Rouge! Topic is 'The Importance of Natural History Collections' @jembrown.bsky.social is primary host/organizer ssb2026.github.io

Less than two weeks left to order one of the shirts I designed for this year's LSUMNS Big Day, featuring the most magnificent bird, Fregata magnificens! lsuornithology2025.itemorder.com/shop/home/ Also please donate to our Big Day Fundraiser to support our Ornithology research! givelsu.org/bigday

*** Academic BFD alert *** We just published a new global bird phylogeny. It synthesizes the work of thousands of researchers before us, and it will grow and improve over time. @snacktavish.bsky.social @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Today four @lsumns.bsky.social Ornithology graduate students are treking across Louisiana trying to see as many bird species as possible for our annual Big Day Birdathon Fundraiser! Donate to support our research here: bbis32491p.sky.blackbaud.com/big-day-fund... #ornithology #birding

Awesome new paper by @lucalivraghi.bsky.social et al. doi.org/10.1016/j.cu... in @currentbiology.bsky.social on the evo-devo of a butterfly color variation enjoy the show!

Bird colouration varies a tremendous amount. But why? In a new paper, @j-dunning.net , John Endler, & I look at the relationship between plumage and viewing conditions in 2610 species of birds, finding strong, non-sexual effects (esp. on females). 📷Zak Pohlen (tanager), Darren Clark (thrush)

Arsenic was also commonly used in preparing taxidermy in the 19th & 20th centuries, which is why I'm wearing a mask while taking samples from this 100-year-old Great Bustard! Arsenic can inhibit DNA extraction, so we try to take tissue from toepads & legs as they were less likely to be treated.

Hi all! I got the good news last week, but now that I've officially accepted it, I'm excited to announce that I have just been awarded a Smithsonian Pre-doctoral Fellowship!!! Looking forward to diving deeper into the VERY cool world of iridescent feathers as I plug away at this dissertation 🪶

Outstanding, and thank you! I use the #FeatherAtlas often, but these days I'm not sure it'll be available much longer. www.fws.gov/lab/feathera...

🧵 1/ New study on squamate color evolution hits the press: we show that brightness variation in lizards & snakes is strongly linked to habitat openness 🌞 This reveals how ecological pressures drive color evolution in one of the most diverse groups of tetrapods www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Listen to our interview with the author of The Feather Thief in this week's episode! The episode is available wherever you get your podcasts. Please share and help us promote this, we want to spread the word!! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/8... #podcast #book #science #truecrime #birds #feathers

I would love to give more seminars this year! If your department, lab, or group is looking for a talk on bird colouration, I’d love to chat.

Thinking about applying for a UK-based Marie Curie postdoctoral fellowship? Aberdeen just announced our internal process, so I assume the rest of UKHE has similar timelines. Now is the time to start chatting with potential UK hosts! marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/post...

In awe of this starling murmuration in the shape of a bird! www.newscientist.com/article/mg24... (hint hint - we have a full episode on starlings if you want to learn more: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/3... ) #starling #murmuration #birds #bird #nature #starlings

I have a new paper about these cute little guys (and some girls)! White-necked Jacobins are interesting because all males and some but not all (!) females are brightly colored. The scientific question is why some but not all females? (Img credit: Kate & Sam)

A blue rachis is just so cool 🤩

REALLY fascinating 👇 !!

We talk about the Argus Pheasant in our most recent episode. Check it out here: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/7...

This is an excellent explanation of MCMC, if you need one (or need one to steal for use in teaching 😂)

Such a great crew to collaborate with! Go give our paper a read (link below)

New preprint by butterfly wizard @lucalivraghi.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... We mapped optix (again?!) as the switch gene of a natural polymorphism, this time controlling silver patches of a mountain butterfly. Gorgeous RNAi validation, evidence of selective sweeps, introgression

I am horrified by FedEx's current commercial portraying a driver who killed a rattlesnake while delivering a package as a hero. I have written a letter (text below) to FedEx marketing officials and hope that you will do so as well, and will share this post to get more people involved. 1/4

New paper out! We show that heart cockles use bundled fiber optic cables to transmit light through "skylights" in their shell for their photosynthetic algae. The skylights filter out harmful UV radiation. These coral analogues are cool critters!! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

hey people who teach Ornithology - would you be so kind as to share your syllabus with me? I'm proposing a new Ornithology course here, and would be v helpful to have examples as I make a syllabus... @evornithology.bsky.social @clarkrushing.bsky.social etc etc

Our miRNA story is now in @science.org ! We found a microRNA, not a protein, that finally solved a long-standing evolutionary mystery of wing coloration in butterflies and moths. (1/n) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
