Academia in 2025: For weeks I’ve been working through botched copy-edits of my monograph, outsourced by the publisher to a company I’d never heard of, until it finally dawned on me the terrible job might be AI. A quick search confirmed the company recently launched new AI software, which now means..

Can't wait to dive into this! Great to see that the history of planning is also thriving in French studies.

AI just refused to generate an image for me featuring Trump's Utopia. It would violate their policy

If you're in Cambridge, I'll be presenting my new research on Arghiri Emmanuel next week, 27 May, 5:30pm @mmll-cambridge.bsky.social See abstract below & location details below

They’re here 🎉 @versobooks.bsky.social

We're hiring! Two tenure-track openings for Assistant Professors in Political Science or International Relations. Sharing = 🙏❤️ www.universiteitleiden.nl/vacatures/20...

Seems like I've entered the dead trap of being either too qualified or without sufficient experience

At the PEF Annual Conference, diving into progressive economics in a time that demands bold ideas. The challenges are daunting, but the discussions are vital. #ProgressiveEconomics @soaseconomics.bsky.social www.youtube.com/live/5L8x8yj...

Conference attendance fees inequality: I truly appreciate that there are reduced fees for unfunded scholars. But no matter what you have to pay, you will still have to pay it from your own pocket, on top of which you have to pay for travel & accommodation.

1/🧵 Immanuel Wallerstein is known for his world-systems analysis. But few recall that his ideas were shaped by engagement with African decolonisation. In the 1960s, #Wallerstein lived and travelled across #Africa, meeting #Fanon and Samir Amin, and admiring #Nkrumah and Cabral.

Really looking forward to presenting my new research @mmll-cambridge.bsky.social later this month, work that I've been carrying out as the recipient of the @frenchstudies.bsky.social postdoctoral fellowship prize. A big thanks to Tobias Barnett and Maddison Sumner for putting this together.

I’m wondering who will publish my collected works of job applications

Trump and his cronies want farm workers afraid. They know when workers fear federal agents, they're less likely to report wage theft or bad conditions. We're fighting hard against the Trump Admin's destructive, xenophobic campaign. Donate today! ufw.org/fightback #WeFeedYou

The madness of starting to consider commuting by air travel for a job.

For men in academia: your women colleagues, when someone writes them to ask whether there are any funding possibilities at least try to think of some for a minute before aswering.

I think I need to unsubscribe from the Critical Theory newsletter. It's beyond embarrassing....

Really great to see this. Couldn't imagine this in the French context. Or do you know of any initiatives? www.theguardian.com/books/2025/m...

Somewhat outlandish perhaps to say as a Marxist, but I still find the whole effort to determine who the revolutionary subject is baffling. Sure, there's a time for everything, but it's always felt as the astrology of Marxism to me.

I simply cannot wrap my head around the Left's (or is it only Löwy?) praise for the pope. When someone denies women the right to control their own bodies, and calls gender ideology the "ugliest danger of our time," I do not think we should be fooled.

Paris : je passe le weekend du 28 mai à Paris & j'aimerais aller au théâtre. Je suis incroyablement triste que l'alerte mail n'a pas fonctionné pour Romancero Queer à la Colline - je cherche donc des billets ou des alternatives !

Look what came in the mail

L'enregistrement de la séance est (déjà !) en ligne : adlc.hypotheses.org/15834

Rutger Bregman’s book Moral Ambition calls for successful people to use their talents to “make a difference.” But he’s suspicious of systemic change — making his call for personal morality into a shallow exercise in self-help.

"a voice for the marginalised." Pope Francis only hated trans people and women. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a...

Starmer hitting a historic low...

Hiring policy: I'm pretty sure that in the UK, it is not allowed to look up candidates online. Is this also the case elsewhere? And to what extent is this rule kept or not?

Anyone any experience with deciphering "adjunct" position job postings from American institutions?
