Is this... spring? (Whisper it)

📢 Our #WGAPodcast launched today 🥳 & is hosted on @ucddublin.bsky.social History Hub. Please share the link 🙂: @womenshistnet.bsky.social @whaireland.bsky.social @drmarymcauliffe.bsky.social @womensinstitute.bsky.social @ihr.bsky.social @royalhistsoc.bsky.social @socialhistsoc.bsky.social

Next week, Elisabeth Leake, the Lee E Dirks Chair in History at Tufts' Fletcher School of Diplomacy, will be speaking @qmul.ac.uk She will be talking about global histories of Decolonisation. It's free to attend, with a reception after. You can register here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/decoloniza...

Really interesting article about development trajectories and the late imperial state, working through policy formation and its determinants. I recently had a good student ask me about the value of understanding contingency in historical writing, & I'm definitely going to recommend them this piece!

We are increasingly concerned about the crisis in UK Higher Education. Read our joint statement with @royalhistsoc.bsky.social , History UK and the @histassoc.bsky.social https://buff.ly/4hSg16N #history #skystorians

In this I draw attention to the Justice Is Not Seasonal protest which highlighted the mistreatment of farm workers on British farms. I argue that better working conditions is about more than just what we pay at the checkout. theconversation.com/the-uk-farme...

'The real unit of resource for teaching UK undergraduates is now very low—£5,570 in 2012 pounds last month, which is back to the mid-1990s nadir and low enough to make teaching UK students uneconomic for many universities.' 1/3

I wrote up some thoughts about French agricultural politics on the occasion of the Salon de l'Agriculture. If 'TLDR', you can scroll to the bottom and click on the interview link where I say much of it out loud! Farming! At the Salon (de l'Agriculture) awmsmith.wordpress.com/2025/02/23/f...

On the opening day of the Salon de l'Agriculture, I spoke to France24 about the President's visit and issues affecting French agriculture more broadly (trade, environment, and politics) www.france24.com/en/video/202...

My wider point: if you disembed agriculture from its social context in terms of trade, then you'll create social and economic deserts at home and environmental deserts abroad

I am also hungry for change ***holds earpiece, nods sagely*** Apologies, I want to clarify that what I am hungry for is cheese

Emphasis on around midday, reckon it'll be about quarter past

Will be on @france24.com around midday London time to talk about the opening day of the Agricultural show in Paris. It was a raucous one last year for the President, but the optics of a more peaceful visit this year mask trade disputes, ongoing eco debates & divided politics amongst the unions

I'm very much looking forward to dissecting the political economy of the current UK government alongside this truly stellar lineup. All are welcome to this online webinar! Please do sign up via the link in the thread below.

The first eight months of Labour government have been tumultuous. Nowhere more than in the politics of economics. In our next webinar, @morganj0nes.bsky.social, @samfr.bsky.social, @katealexandershaw.bsky.social, @theobertram.bsky.social and @colmpm.bsky.social will explore what we've learned🧵

Quick reminder that @mideastineurope.bsky.social and I will be discussing @ilotem.bsky.social's book that investigates memory of violent pasts across Europe:

As archives are under threat, remember that the reason we have anything left from times past is many little miracles and many more dedicated people. I remembered this when I pulled an old calendar from an only slightly damaged box. Almost unreadable, pages sticking, ink smeared. From 2018. 🗃️

Teaching in the Natural History Museum today. I was taking some QM students round as part of a 'London and its Museums' course

This coming Monday (17.02) I’ll be launching my book and talking about memory politics at the @ihr.bsky.social together with the amazing @saraharens.bsky.social and @mideastineurope.bsky.social with all the drinks afterwards. In London? Come! Online? That’s ok too! www.history.ac.uk/events/book-...

'In a series of consultancy studies about 20 years ago....A key conclusion was that QR was not just an important part of research funding but the critical element that incentivised staff, lubricated the research machine and geared up value.' 1/3

Still time to sign up for tonight's event online

two things we need to keep getting into the media and shouting at government 1. no-one can cut their way to growth 2. this is sector-wide: it’s not just the survival of specific institutions that is at stake (important tho that is!) but the survival of whole disciplines

Very much looking forward to launching @ilotem.bsky.social ‘s new book ‘Dealing with Dark Pasts’ at the Institute for Historical Research in London on 17 Feb at 5:30pm. Registration and more info here: www.sas.ac.uk/news-events/...

Good piece on the human costs of a shrinking UK university system. So much waste, so many opportunities lost for younger people. www.bbc.com/news/article...

If you missed our third distinguished Hennessy Lecture this week, by @sayeedawarsi.bsky.social, the recording is now available online. It's a hugely thought-provoking, challenging & important reflection on Islam & Islamophobia in modern Britain. I recommend watching. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrEF...

If you're in or near London, consider preparing for this Free IHR training event by visiting the Migration Museum, Lewisham before it's 'All Our Stories: Migration and the Making of Britain' exhibition before it closes 30 March. @migrationmuseum.org . My PhD was supervised 50/50 between politics and modern languages at Cardiff and it made the whole experience so much richer. The proposal to close MLANG is incredibly short-sighted and detrimental to all at CU. The importance of languages and understanding global cultures can't be overstated!

The @mileendinstitute.bsky.social continues to fill up big rooms! Today for the third of the Hennessy lectures with Baroness Sayeeda Warsi.
