Randomly (not) reminded of how the Polish town of Katowice was forcibly renamed after Stalin's death, and the change was so abrupt that people who were traveling by train overnight were shocked to arrive in 'Stalinogrod'. One 16yo girl was sentenced to 4 years of prison for protesting the change.

Imperfect alt text is better than none, it's never going to emulate seeing the image exactly. I personally lean into short description of what's relevant + meta details like date, place, whatever helps with extra research for added context. I always check alt text for more info myself.

After another art class with 8-12 year-olds I really think current education systems desperately need a sort of New Media class that just goes over current memes, virals, ads and socials and teaches kids how to approach them with a critical and discerning mind so they aren't fucking helpless.
