Long walk along river this AM, brought up wkend firewood & filled bird feeders. Now, slow-simmering bison chili. Wife does all the Italian cooking & baking, I do chili, stew & steak. Grew up in W TX, ranch kid. Roundup cook was from Mexico, didn't matter back then if "legal". He taught me to cook.

"WARNING": Blood. Fascinating walk along river this AM! Came across blood smears along river edge snow/ice. Right away, knew it was river otters, but amt of blood was too much for a fish. Followed the trail for 1/2 mi to "otter latrine area" & found tufts of downy fur: prob muskrat, met its demise.

Reminder that fire crews were stretched thin last year. The Wapiti Fire smoldered for a month before it took off and ravaged the entire northern section of the SNRA and threatened to destroy Stanley. It continued burning until winter weather. #idpol
