When people say modern Lego sets are the death of creativity it’s like saying puzzles are the death of creativity because they aren’t mosaics. They serve entirely different purposes.

Skins and battle passes in Marvel Rivals are fairly low cost and anecdotally well received on US social media. Might indicate a strategy to quickly build player collections as an economic moat against competitors as Rivals' draw is IP and incremental gameplay improvements: nothing revolutionary.
