"There is no #placemaking 'profession'; in fact, that’s one of placemaking’s strengths... placemaking has no exclusive knowledge; ...Instead, placemaking sets out to understand social needs and identify the best way to organize space in service of those needs." www.linkedin.com/posts/placem...

For some in positions of power, the greatest fear isn't that a major policy might fail, but that it might prove wildly successful. Today's move to halt congestion pricing says nothing about transportation or economics—but everything about the people who oversee them. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/n...

Let’s use this moment of crisis to make NYC even stronger, more powered by our people, and more defined by our democratic streets and transportation system. Long live NYC and #CongestionPricing!

The need to support, connect and organize public space and placemaking leaders has never been greater. We are all most affected by, and can most affect, our shared places. Authentic, inclusive, local place leadership, applied to improving our common spaces, is fundamental to community resilience.

Can a humble bench make a difference? Absolutely. The Corner Bench experiment proved that quality public seating fosters comfort, connection, and respect. Small changes, big impact, that’s the Catalyse way! www.sociallifeproject.org/the-corner-b... #Placemaking #CommunityEngagement #UrbanDesign

Many of today's pain points have direct correlations to a lack of 'community.' Common interactions have gone from the public square to the radio to the TV to social media. Our ability to coexist as human beings has suffered. Good #placemaking disrupts this troubling trend.

Five years ago today #PlacemakingX was launched globally! The goal was to globally network and accelerate learning, advocacy and impact for #placemaking. Please share thoughts on how the movement has evolved and where #publicspace most needs support now.

Our Fred Kent led the master plan for Bryant Park in 1980, not longer after founding @ppsplacemaking.bsky.social in 1975 to put the work of #WilliamHWhyte into practice.

Looking forward to checking out this film for my health and built environment course.

I took an eye-opening two day "course" in Manhattan with Fred Kent & Project for Public Spaces maybe 15 years ago. If you're interested in cities, you should be interested in #placemaking -- Now take 20 minutes and sit down and watch this video about Fred. #urbandesign #cityplanning

This is in response to a new article by @davidzipper.bsky.social about the apparent decline in hanging out on American streets, a basic tenet of urbanism championed by such luminaries as Jane Jacobs & Jan Gehl:

Rather than pausing to linger, American pedestrians are racing through streets – and doing so alone. A new study from Ed Glaeser, Carlo Ratti, et al. raises troubling questions about the decline of streetlife. Me, in CityLab 🧵

Let's all redouble our focus of care and compassion in place! We are redoubling our efforts to globally network learning, advocacy, and action for our shared places. Our thoughts on how #placemaking can transcend, and even be fueled by, #placetaking politics:

The Place Man is my first documentary, exploring Fred Kent’s inspiring journey as a pioneer of Placemaking. From transforming Bryant Park to shaping cities for connection, this film highlights the power of public spaces. Watch it and join the movement for people-centered places! www.theplaceman.org

Place is where the most potent & authentic power remains. With new power structures in America, defined by a culture of #placetaking, it's easy to forget how the most loved places preserve & pioneer what’s most cared about. How loved places & #placemaking can win: www.linkedin.com/pulse/progre...

To make housing more affordable we need to be investing in & building homes & public spaces that support each other. Most new housing investment is “place taking” rather than placemaking - degrading the public realm that could help make the neighborhoods affordable, safe & economically thriving.

Finally got around to reading this important @dkthomp.bsky.social piece on American isolation, a topic I've been warning about for years. I'm convinced our nation's salvation depends on reversing our growing collective social isolation. It's made us unhappy, anxious and pugilistic.

“degraded public spaces—and degraded public life—are in some ways the other side of all our investments in video games and phones and bigger, better private space.” @dkthomp.bsky.social
