The question I am really struggling with right now is: What is "law & order" and the entire American constitutional order *for* if it isn't a Go Directly to Jail card for guys like Donald Trump and Elon Musk for doing *exactly* what they're doing right now?

With another set of news headlines about political elites using “””Roman salutes””” I just want to note that the Nazi salute means “I want to murder your family” and the n-word means “I want to lynch you.” That’s what they mean, they make me righteously angry, and I won’t let anybody minimize them.

My Open Letter to Elon Musk. “I will use every tool at my disposal to protect this country from Trump. I will litigate to defend voting rights until there are no cases left to bring. I will speak out against authoritarianism until my last breath.” [democracydocket.com]

the single most un-american and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an american president

In its simplest terms, the apparent demise of #USAID is the result of the world's richest man ending a program that helps millions of poor people. You don't need a Ph.D. in moral theology to see why this is an evil. You can just read Jesus's parables on the rich and the poor.

@eve6.bsky.social My children (8 and 5) have curated their own 500+ song Spotify playlist. This morning, "Inside Out" came on sandwiched between the Bluey theme song and "Defying Gravity." Honestly, it kinda worked.

The AHA & the @oah.org have released a joint statement on the presidential executive order “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K–12 Schooling.” “We reject the premise that it is ‘anti-American’ or ‘subversive’ to learn the full history of the United States.” 🗃️

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.

The Catholic tradition holds clearly that how we treat migrants is how we treat Christ as explained by Erga Migrantes Caritas Christi (issued under JP2) Inhumane treatment of migrants and refugees would be like someone spitting on the Eucharist or insulting the Blessed mother.

One of the most blatant forms of Christian hypocrisy in our time is Christians holding all the ordinary people we share this country with accountable to the most rigid moral standards while simultaneously holding their preferred politicians accountable to no standards at all.

My @thestorygraph.com wrap-up for the year. Not listed: comic books and all the Dog Man books I read with the kids.

Being against AI right now feels an awful lot like being against the Iraq War at the time. But I worry there won't be some future time when it's over and we all tacitly agree it was a terrible mistake that we won't mention again.

If there's anything to the concern that students lack the ability to "take initiative, figure things out, and deal with setbacks," then shifting our language may not be enough, but I feel confident that using ChatGPT in the classroom helps with that problem in exactly zero ways.

In addition to the racism, I ask again: WHO IS THIS FOR??

Who is this for?

Inspired by @lmsacasas.bsky.social's recent post, I have been trying to articulate why I find the AI evangelists in education to be so off-putting and contrary to what I think my mission is. socraticreview.org/blog/2025/1/ai-and-the-humanities-first-questions

That's alright, 1.5° above pre-industrial levels was just humanity's "would be nice" goal. The real disappointment will be when we blow through the 2.0° target in a few years. The consolation, though, will be that we didn't even really try.

going into 2025 with this energy

What are we DOING here? We're just meant to sit and act like this insane plagiarism and climate threat that requires more money than anything has ever cost is worth it? Are we meant to pretend that ChatGPT is worth this aimless, meaningless destruction of capital and our environment? For what?

More people in education desperately need to be this thoughtful. I am increasingly certain that there is no place for LLMs and other products branded as “AI” in education. From a great piece by @lmsacasas.bsky.social theconvivialsociety.substack.com/p/to-hell-wi...

Not just higher education!

Considering Nolan’s track record of emotionally dead films, this will likely disappoint me. But, having learned no lessons from “Troy” 20 years ago, I’ll still be there on opening night.
