Structural diversity is an important predictor of forest productivity responses to drought 🌲🧪 Productivity losses related to drought increased with greater structural diversity & decreased with functional identities characterized by conservative resource strategies 📊 🌏 🔗 https://buff.ly/40JUKEY

✒️ New Paper Alert! #Sustainability #ImpactAssessments of #trade agreements tend to mute or belittle impacts on #biodiversity. Check out our suggestions for more inclusive, inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability impact assessments of trade agreements: rdcu.be/d9oHk

Happy to share our latest work towards monitoring functional diversity using #Sentinel-2 time series at @esa.int's #BIOSPACE25 conference in Frascati, Italy. Visit our poster and talk to our team from @spatialgenetics.bsky.social and @wslresearch.bsky.social! 😊

Sustainability and environmental impact assessments of trade and investment agreements need to address biodiversity more effectively! enveurope.springeropen.com/articles/10....

🚀 The Genes from Space team recently hosted a workshop in Bern with over 100 participants (!!) joining to learn about our new monitoring tool. It enables users to use space-based Earth observation data to assess habitat suitability and estimate key genetic diversity metrics worldwide🌍

🌍🌳 Using Sentinel 2- data, we showed that Swiss forests with higher functional diversity resist & recover better from drought! A step toward scaling BEF insights to real-world forests! Check out our new publication in GCB by @helfenstein.earth et al. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

A couple of years ago, I switched fields a bit by starting to work with European beech. The more I get to know this tree species, the more I appreciate and love it. Now, the first paper – written together with MSc student Dave Kurath – is out! agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Between 2019 and 2023, researchers paid $8.968 billion to make papers open access. Imagine what else could be done with this money if it wasnt paid to for profit publishing companies... 👉 arxiv.org/abs/2407.16551

Our research is finally out 📜 @natureportfolio.bsky.social in our publication we show that #landscape_diversity 🏞️promotes #productivity using #remote_sensing on a continental scale 🌎 across 20 years Thanks to everyone who contributed✨ #University_of_Zurich #URPP_GCB www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Bad. But how bad? I once asked myself, while finding fakes in the Scientific Report @natureportfolio.bsky.social. So I decide to "do my our research" - I took 100 articles in a row from Physical sciences that contains diffraction. Result - 15 fakes out 100. Details in the 🧵 #ResearchIntegrity 1/x

I am excited that our symposium "Adaptation to environmental changes in trees through the lens of common gardens and genomics" has been accepted to be included at the @eseb.bsky.social conference in August in Barcelona. Be ready to submit your abstracts!

Next time I move house I'm getting ants to shift the furniture.

What a paragraph.

📣 As of January 2025, researchers in Switzerland can participate in (almost all) calls for proposals of Horizon Europe and the Digital Europe Programme. This means that they can submit project proposals in the role of coordinator. 🧪🧬🔬🔭 www.horizon-europe.ch #HorizonEurope #Science #Innovation

Just deactivated my X account and it feels amazing.

Working with collaborators in the Global South it upsets me how many pay expensive software license fees, or use insecure pirated versions, when free open-source alternatives are available. Below is a list of easy swaps. Please add to it and share! 👇

A PhD student at CambridgeHPS has been putting “artwork signs” up all around our department next to “ordinary things” and they are brilliant. They unfailingly make me stop and smile and notice the wonderful strangeness of the world ✨ Best workplace spirit-lift hack I’ve seen in a long time 🙌

🦈 Overfishing has halved shark populations ☠️ A new @science.org study find that since 1970, global shark and ray numbers have dropped by 50% due to overfishing, eroding marine biodiversity and key ecological functions. 🔗 doi.org/10.1126/scie... #Sharks #Conservation #SciComm 🧪

So this happened. Somebody is not getting tenure @ethzurich.bsky.social. It took a lot of people with a lot of courage and strength to make this happen. Thinking of them today! www.tagesanzeiger.ch/klimaforsche...

I want this: Genome-edited Chardonnay grapes resistant or tolerant to mildew & powdery mildew! Did you know that grapes are grown on only ~5% of European agricultural land, but account for ~2/3 of all fungicide sprayed in Europe? onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... #plantscience

I asked the class to write a note to future ecology students. I received this masterpiece from the fifth row.

This really shouldn't be a thing, should it?

Following the news that eLife will not receive an Impact Factor in 2025, we’ve shared an update on how our model is doing since we were first placed “on hold” by Web of Science, and what we’re up to now. Find out more. https://buff.ly/3ATRAFT

🌟 Throwback to my 2020 research published in @science.org 🌼🐝 We showed how bumble bees actively shape their environment—making plants flower earlier to meet their needs. Nature’s engineers in action! 🧪🌏 Sharing this for anyone who missed it—let’s dive in! [1/17] 👇

Magical things can happen in this country. We just said "NO" to more highways and with that more traffic. A great day for everyone who's pushing for more sustainable mobility!

Really nice looking postion open here at SLU Sweden: Professor (fully tenured) in conservation ecology with focus on biodiversity linked to forest management & green infrastructure. It is also at our Alnarp campus which is...well...rather nice & even has a castle! 🧪🌎 www.slu.se/en/about-slu...

Being a bit of a map nerd, I'm really going to have fun with this.

In 2024 Switzerland finally realized we should also vaccinate boys! Before, it was a girl-only vaccination. Not clear from this graph whether the UK was smart enough to vaccinate all genders these past years.

300,000 women die from cervical cancer every year. But this is a cancer we can effectively eliminate with the HPV vaccine. This is something very few people know about. Article from my colleague @scientificdiscovery.dev: ourworldindata.org/hpv-vaccinat...

I made one for stats papers

I made one of these for behaviour genetics back in the day.

This important paper by @cengizakandil.bsky.social & colleagues provides a pan-Arctic scale assessment of industrial human activity, which alarmingly revealed a high annual development rate in these vulnerable ecosystems. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
