Boosting this for Bandcamp Fri as it's an esp great day to buy since proceeds are flowing to Musicares to help musicians in LA impacted by wildfires. Crucial. Me & fam are still getting back to normal after my freak hospitalization a& recovery, so it helps us too. xx softabuse.bandcamp.com/merch

Now playing on Upside Down: "Twin Beams" by Susan Alcorn

Now playing on Upside Down: "Bitcher" by The Dead C

Upside Down on KFAI is happening today at 2pm, we’ll be playing all sorts of new and old things, & paying homage to Susan Alcorn as well. Tune in! 90.3 FM here or www.kfai.org anywhere

absolutely gutted to learn of the passing of Susan Alcorn, an incredibly gifted improviser, arranger, and musician who bridged so many musical worlds. We just hung out last week at her show in Baltimore with David Grubbs. I am in shock at this loss but grateful to her for her work and her example.

Happy 80th Robert Wyatt!

I totally forgot that the KFAI playlist bot is now rolling again. A nice way to keep up with what’s on.

Fans of weird New Zealand rock music should check out this wonderful new song by O/PUS, released quietly just before Xmas. Members of O/PUS have been in a million other bands eg. Pumice, Futurians etc. Full album coming this year on 1:12 Records stabbiesetc.bandcamp.com/track/ancien...

If I were in Oakland, I’d be at Lloyd’s Records lloydsrecords.com

Not sure how I missed this absolute beauty from @nofansrecords.bsky.social but it’s stopped me in my tracks today. I will hang my head in shame until lunch time.

This happens to be true, the new album is great, and this is worth a read.

This week’s Upside Down on KFAI (www.KFAI.org) proffers a recap of 2024 from my pov, and will include all kinds of great records like the one pictured from P. Wits and Thistle Group. Join me live today from 2PM central (airwaves or stream), or on the archive thereafter. Ta!

Steven R. Smith and everything he touches is on ‘auto purchase’. His discography is an insert in this release. Extensive back catalogue.

rec of the day: GFRENZY "eel creek" (stabblies LP) vinylization of a CDR by this long-time stabbies label presence (willis, teen x-ray) is a lovely slurp of lo-fi song invention with lots of grit and samples of various kiwi noisers. a very cunning assemblage! stabbiesetc.bandcamp.com/album/eel-cr...

RIP Ed Askew youtu.be/XaamTV8lK2c?...

Now through January 1, the code “goodbye24” (remove the “) gets you 25% off anything / everything at softabuse.bandcamp.com. And anything / everything you’d consider is helpful at the moment. Next year may be a slow one around here, depending on recovery, but stay tuned! xx

As many of you know, my recent hospitalization has my family in a bit of a bind. We’ve been showered generously by friends & family near & far but I wanted to open another outlet for potential assistance, as recovery continues. (more in the next post!)
