View of the light of sunset over what I think is Wasootch Peak as seen from Kananaskis Trail highway, Alberta.

So there’s not a whole lot I can do about this in the short term but those listening to Songbirding via YouTube Music (because Google forced us podcasters there when shutting down Google Podcasts) will not get the latest episode due to a copyright claim for Ovenbird birdsongs 🤦‍♂️ The claim is of…

Sometimes bird photographers get annoyed with stems in front of birds, but how about a stem passing through the bird? 😂 This Northern Cardinal male's crest is lightly brushing a vine stem. 🪶 #NorthernCardinal #birds #birding

Amongst all the annoyance at Twitch's changes it at least pushed me to push stream videos onto YT. Here's a stream of me going through bird photos, videos, and audio from the first week of 2025. Plenty more weeks to post if it's of interest. 🪶 #birding #birds www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbvY...

Songbirding is back with new episodes! This is the first of the 2023 recordings in Allegheny National Forest, and a half-way point for the podcast season. In this we begin exploring the Buzzard Swamp. #birdsong #birds #podcast #birding pnc.st/s/songbirdin...

I guess starting tonight I'm formally in the drafting stage of scripting a new limited podcast series. It will be about birdsong in a way, but very different than Songbirding. So far it's been months of making scrap notes with ideas and breaking down sub-topics and interview subjects...

A new set of Songbirding episodes is ready to go, starting next week. Patreon subscribers at the Early Bird and above tier have access right now to the first. 🪶 Here's a 5 minute teaser for next week's episode. #birdsong #birding #FieldRecording #birds www.patreon.com/posts/songbi...

A wonderful quote I heard tonight listening to @casualbirderpod.bsky.social speaking with Keith Betton of the Hampshire Ornithological Society in her latest episode. (Alt text in screenshot.) 🪶 #birding

A trio of snowbirds species I found this weekend -- 3 Horned Larks (yellowish faces), a Snow Bunting (white bird with light browns), and 2 Lapland Longspurs (the remaining two). Seen at a Snow Bunting banding site in Haldimand County, Ontario. 🪶 #birds #SnowBunting #LaplandLongspur #HornedLark

It took me this long to figure out Live Photos on the iPhone can be turned into videos 😂 Caption for this: “No pictures!”

One of my favourites to photograph - a Brown Creeper! Might take a moment to spot it. Photo taken at Memorial Park, Erin Mills, Ontario. 🪶 #birds #birding #BrownCreeper #Ontario

New Songscapes episode is out: "A Cold June Dawn Chorus at Deer Lick Run". Recorded in Sheffield, Pennsylvania in early June of 2024. 🪶 This acts as a bit of an accompaniment to the next Songbirding episode due in a week or so! #birding #birds #birdsong #FieldRecording pnc.st/s/songscapes...

I forgot to share this at the time, but during the Flamborough Christmas Bird Count I managed to find this Marsh Wren just north of Crieff, Ontario. It turned out to be the first record ever in Wellington County of this species in the winter. 🪶 #ChristmasBirdCount #birds #MarshWren

Last weekend found this Eastern Screech-Owl while I was looking around for Brown Creepers at the Woodland Cemetery in Hamilton, Ontario. 🪶 #HamOnt #BurlON #Ontario #EasternScreechOwl #owls #birds #birding

Unwin Avenue bridge - the undisputed Toronto spot to sit for an hour and observe hundreds of our winter birds congregating in the open area along the edge of the ice. This morning with Feminist Bird Club watching two dozen species including shovelers, many trumpeter swans, and hundreds of redheads.

This Pine Warbler has been hanging around Mt Albion CA in Hamilton for the past few weeks. It's been very focused on seeds and suet people have left behind. This photo is from a couple weeks ago. #HamOnt #birds #PineWarbler #birding

super needed research in vancouver ~ in pacific spirit! 🧪🌎👩🏻‍🔬 when moving from vancouver to the island one of the most noticeable changes was how quiet it finally was here this research is investigating the mental health benefits of “silent trails” really cool!! @tiger.bsky.social 👇🏼

Beginning to catch up on posting my 2025 photos. Have been out of commission due to a muscle injury so very little time out birding. Here's a Double-crested Cormorant, seen along the Bayfront Park trail in Hamilton, Ontario. 🪶 #HamOnt #Ontario #birds #birding #DoubleCrestedCormorant

So I got another one of those “we have a guest for your podcast” (that records in the field and has no guests generally 😂) but this time from a very popular bird feeder company… and entirely AI generated. Maybe if they reached out with a real person, but I’m just so disappointed with this approach.

Amplifying! Minnow: A new magazine about conservation in the Great Lakes region and the species often overlooked. They're looking for illustration and photo pitches to accompany articles and for the cover of their second issue. Submissions close Sunday, Jan 27th: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Is there a way to determine bird age from their skeleton? Specifically woodpeckers 🧪

People sometimes make fun of science that sounds stupid and random. Meanwhile, a study of lizard saliva turned into a peptide medication, which was turned into a diabetes medication, which was turned into a GLP1 weight loss drug, that just became the first therapy every approved for … sleep apnea

Still around. Had a back spasm lead eventually to a muscle injury that had me in a lot of pain the last couple weeks so no podcasts, videos and not much birding done. Snuck in a couple livestreams when the pain took a pause just to feel something approaching productive.
