Professors can’t even manage to indoctrinate students on the importance of reading the syllabus.

Actually, flip the headline. It's really "How the Federal Government Became so Dependent on Universities." These competitively awarded, peer reviewed research grants produce tremendous returns on investment. New tech, health, science that benefit all people & businesses in the USA & world.

Q: "How do you respond to Governor Newsom?" Sen. Van Hollen: "I think Americans are tired of elected officials or politicians who are all finger to the wind...Anybody who can't stand up for the Constitution and the right of due process doesn't deserve to lead."

There is a much too rarely mentioned but essential difference between Donald Trump and Abrego Garcia: Abrego Garcia is not a convicted felon.

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

Tax Day next up: NSF! 🛰️ $40 a year. That’s what the average U.S. taxpayer pays annually to fund the National Science Foundation. 💡 Science isn’t luxury - it’s infrastructure. From disaster prediction to cybersecurity to the tech in your phone, NSF powers the systems that keep society running.

Under-appreciated problem. Many Repubs have never served in state legislatures, nor were they Hill staffers, so they’ve got zero experience trying to accomplish something. They’re not pissed Trump is taking Congress’ power, because they’ve never exercised it.

Happy Confederate Surrender Day, a fine time to consider two lessons: 1. They can be beaten 2. Victory means nothing if the traitors are allowed to slink back home as if nothing happened

The IRS giving ICE access to migrant workers’ tax data isn’t 'efficiency.' It’s state-sanctioned violence against people who keep the economy running. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/u...

NEW: The Government Accountability Office is auditing DOGE. They're specifically looking into how it handled data, and could eventually give us our best look yet at what's actually happening inside these agencies. by @leahfeiger.bsky.social and @timmarchman.bsky.social www.wired.com/story/gao-au...

Republicans say they're not going to cut Social Security, yet they've closed 1000 offices, fired 7000 people, cut off phone services that seniors rely on, threatened to shut it down, and said it wouldn't matter if someone missed a month's payment.

Can we get more of this? “The Japanese American National Museum will ‘scrub nothing,’ Fujioka said, and instead will highlight the importance of DEI. “Our community is based on diversity, equity is guaranteed to us in the Constitution, and inclusion is what we believe in,” Fujioka said.

Tell me again why we’re letting a 78 year old, legit smelly, odorous, frail, loser old man who bankrupted a CASINO bankrupt the country? Congress? Any answers?

Man it is really hard to be living in the USA right now and getting news about how South Korea deposed their president for staging a coup and then their Supreme Court just said yup, definitely the right thing to do there.

Nobody knew how bad this would be, except for the many people whose warnings I dismissed, but they don’t count. Actually a good distillation of the mindset. Having already unpersoned everyone who understood what was happening, there’s no need to reconsider the belief in one’s inherent superiority.

There are two problem-solving approaches: 1) identify a problem that you want to solve, then find a method that will solve it or 2) pick a method you want to use, and go hunting for problems. The second way is the stupid way, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that it's the default method in tech.

Just curious...how many in the military voted for president bone spurs?

Hey, at least the guy who singlehandedly cut your 401K in half overnight isn’t spending the weekend enriching himself and the funders of 9/11 at a golf tournament… Oh wait.

I said this last week. I’ll say it this week, next week, and so on, until it ends.

I sometimes wonder whether students recognize how hard it can be to be on and talking for a whole class period, and especially if you have to do it for several class periods in a row. Having that experience gives you a whole new appreciation for how lucid Booker is right now.

Give that man all the flowers. Now let’s give to work so his efforts are not wasted 👏👏👏

Just so everybody understands, Booker has been speaking cogently about the issues the entire time and Strom Thurmond famously spent hours reading from the encyclopedia, because segregationists were and are dumbshits

I’m not saying everyone needs to do *this*. But @booker.senate.gov figured out the biggest best thing HE could do right now. And then he did it. Everyone needs to do *that*.

Yes, AND transgenderism isn’t an epidemic. Identity is not an illness.

I keep saying there's a massive opportunity for any institution that loudly and proudly tells Trump to eat shit and I think that will only become more obvious with time

We’re going to annex Canada and invade Greenland but we can’t request return of an innocent man from El Salvador.

She died in binary. That’s dedication. RIP.

Holy shit. “I confess that I’ve been inadequate. That the Democrats have been responsible for allowing the rise of this demagogue.” Gives an impassioned apology and points to this as a moment of personal vow to action.

Booker: "I confess that I have been imperfect. I confess that I've been inadequate to the moment. I've confess that the Democratic Party has made terrible mistakes that gave a lane to this demagogue. I confess we all must look in the mirror and say 'we will do better.'"

FACT: Social Security has a fraud rate of 0.00625%, which is far lower than private sector retirement programs.

This is so bad. Worse than people can imagine. When you work in our systems, you're generally working in dozens of separate programs that interact with the COBOL architecture. Every one of those would need to be rebuilt. Even if they succeed in migrating, no one would be able to do their jobs.

Got this email from Chuck Schumer today. Note the passive headline, as if there’s nothing Schumer can do about it 🤬

The most serious Nazi shit in this extremely Nazi shit executive order may be the idea, just slipped in there, that one of the "divisive narratives that distort our shared history" is that "race is not a biological reality but a social construct." www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Elon’s coming to Wisconsin to hand out million dollar checks in his bribe scheme. They should arrest him when he does.

“sell your product at a loss, or else” was probably not what the business people were expecting from President Business

I wish people hated fascism half as much as they hate feminism

A registered Republican shot (at) Trump so, don’t be so sure Elon saying “the left” attacked his cars is true. These are individuals, not half the political spectrum, and we don’t even know who. Also, why is destroying cars terrorism and sacking the Capitol to overturn an election isn’t?

"Effective March 10th, I will assume the role of Acting Deputy Director of Extramural Research." - Memoli, the Trump-selected NIH acting Director. This is bad- centralizing control over the grant program. He delegates authority, but it brings grants under closer Trump control.
