The forthcoming "Grammar in Action" book now has an info page on the John Benjamins site 📖😮Blurb and abstracts for all chapters seem to be there! 🐦🐦 benjamins.com/catalog/slsi...

Karl Lugebil (1830-1887), professor in St Petersburg, wrote a review of Anton Dobiasz' book about Apollonius Dyscolus in 1883. Lugebil's graphic illustrates different meanings of copula constructions. This is an early example of hierarchical bracketing! #linguistics cysouw.github.io/graphicalgra...

CLAN does not find lower-case "å" when searching without case-sensitivity (the standard setting) - it only finds upper-case "Å" normally somehow. To find lower-case "å", search has to be case-sensitive for some reason. Non-Danish letters are not mistreated like this 😢 🐦🐦

I took this course a few years ago, and it gave me a whole new perspective on phonetics in interaction. If you're interested in phonetics and conversation analysis, I highly recommend it!

Didn't get the grant that inspired this mood. One "significant weakness" of the proposal was that I can't "adequately demonstrate (...) experience with longitudinal corpus studies and real-time analyses of sound change"

In 1950 Robert Killinger (1925-2006) and Alfred Doppler (born 1921) write a book about grammar for a wider audience. It wasn't a smash hit, but it shows again that drawing syntactic trees was widespread and well-known long before Chomsky and Tesnière stepped on the scene. #linguistics

We had the pleasure to host 2023 Nordisco here in Tampere. Now it’s in beautiful Trondheim! A truly Nordic setting

Can anyone point me to references about how simplifications and/or stereotypes in teaching, particularly #linguistics but any field tbh, can cause problems in fields and/or for interdisciplinarity? #philosophy

Update on Otto Jespersen: I found a single graphical analysis in his work. The abstract letters *S* and *P* are probably an influence from Wundt and Sheffield, whom he cites before the term "immediate constituents" becomes fashionable in the USA. #linguistics cysouw.github.io/graphicalgra...

Hjelmslev's infamous and often-quoted lexical semantic map about wood, shown on the left, originally published in *Omkring sprogteoriens grundlæggelse* (1943: 50) is actually an unquoted example taken from Otto Jespersen's *Sprogundervisning* (1901: 129), shown here on the right.

@olawikander.bsky.social @bnuyaminim.bsky.social Any idea why Greek adds an -α to phoenician letter names (e.g. αλφα for אלף etc.), instead of e.g. the thematic vowel -ο? Is there an ending in early Northwest Semitic to account for this, apart from an accusative (which should not be relevant)?

Last night, I dreamt my partner and I were talking about our (real) podcast, called 'Say it like you play it' (linguistics meets games). At one point, dream-me says: Maybe we should start another podcast called.... Utter it like you butter it. Well done, asleep brain 😆

People, just stop doing Frontiers special issues. Find a nice diamond open access journal, and self-publish and collaboratively peer review the set of papers you all want to write. Do not give Frontiers money. They add no value. If anything, they hurt your reputation. MDPI is of course even worse.

Only a few days left to apply for our PhD studentship! 💥 The PhD is full-time, starting in March 2025, and part of @dappleproject.bsky.social. You will be supervised by @tuffrey-wijne.com, Prof Jayne Price, and myself. The deadline to apply is 20 January, so it’s time to submit!

Our article "Toward a Grammar of Danish Talk-in-Interaction" critically discusses some linguistic concepts in the context of interaction - probably the "programmatic" article for the "Grammar in Everyday Life" project. Now available on ResearchGate: 🐦🐦 www.researchgate.net/publication/...
