Here, I explain how the February 14 "Dear Colleague" letter is a widely expansive distortion of the court’s ruling in SFFA. Institutional responses should remain focused on areas that the Supreme Court addressed and not expand to those clearly outside its purview. www.chronicle.com/article/hitt...

My first solo book is available for pre-order but I’m also excited that it will be open access. I wanted it to be available for educators & anyone who wanted to support immigrant students in their schools. I’m excited to share more later this spring. #immigranted @immigrantednext.bsky.social

For my latest, I talked with @ctulocal1.bsky.social president Stacy Davis Gates and artist and educator Silvia Gonzalez about how Chicago teachers are creating Sanctuary Teams to protect undocumented students and other marginalized youth from Trump's aggression. (Includes organizing resources.)

Friends with books, did you hire someone to do the index, and if so, can you send me some names?? Thanks!

Overwhelming urge to blast Cher post kickboxing in the street in Soho, which is oddly less weird than a lot of other stuff going on #notsorry

How are Chicago schools responding to increased immigration enforcement? Here are five examples. https://www.chalkbeat.org/chicago/2025/01/30/how-chicago-schools-are-responding-to-deportation-threats/

The Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration has started to take shape nationally. All the while, immigrants living in the president’s backyard — in and around the nation’s capital — have drawn blinds, locked doors and begun to plan for the worst.

Thanks for covering the important work. The teachers are doing to protect students @axios.com #immigranted @immigrantednext.bsky.social My comment here: www.axios.com/local/boston...

THIS IS NOT HOW POLICYMAKING HAPPENS YOU CANNOT TAKE EXISTING MONEY AND REDIRECT IT AT YOUR WHIM (I really wish these headlines would do a better job of communicating Trump's extremely limited authority here)

Informative resource for schools, colleges, universities, & community leaders for supporting undocumented students during this critical time. undocedresources.org/undocedresou...

New analysis of Student Voice survey data: Nearly all college students have some (43%) or a lot (44%) of trust in professors. They're much less likely to have a lot of trust in financial aid staff (23%) and college presidents (18%). #edusky #highered www.insidehighered.com/news/student...

Dear hive mind. I'm starting a living document listing Trump actions that are (1) likely unconstitutional, (2) likely illegal, or (3) demonstrate abuse of power. Here's my list so far. If you see something missing, please DM or comment w/a link and I'll add it! docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Let's be VERY clear here. Trump does *not* have the authority to withhold federal funding from public schools for what they teach. The 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act is very explicitly clear on this. #EduSky www.chalkbeat.org/2025/01/29/t...

This order aims to (further) transform the teaching profession from primarily facilitating children’s learning to acting in militaristic service to the nation. And that is terrifying.

ICE raids on hospitals. RFK Jr’s nomination. Pauses in federal funding. There is a systemic, coordinated attack on health & science in this country. This is going to impact our patients, our colleagues, & our families. Our only choice is to be just as uncompromising & coordinated in our response.

These folks are heroic.

In 1843 Nathaniel Hawthorne warned of "a technology so powerful that those born after it will lose the capacity for mature conversation." What alarmed Hawthorne? "The replacement of the open fireplace by the iron stove." cc @pessimistsarc.bsky.social www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Long thread on the UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor's statement of compliance with ICE: The Chancellor's response is not surprising and reflects the position of North Carolina when it comes to immigration enforcement. NC has hidden behind compliance with "the law" for decades. 1/10

And most of the Democratic Party…Educators are heroes. I’m proud to know and collaborate with so many wonderful teachers in Chicago and community organizers.. 🙏💪🏽
