This week my post on farm life is all about the eye in the sky, the relationship with grant agencies and small everyday annoyances.

Our ever popular INTRODUCTION TO SMALLHOLDING weekend in March is full to bursting, but don't despair, we still have space on 26 & 27 April and 28 & 29 June. We're in Devon (lots of local accommodation). Full details here: smallholdertraining.co.uk/introduction...

In chilly February there are still hints of spring; heavily pregnant ewes munching, cows losing their winter coats, sows nesting as farrowing approaches. And perhaps time for reading if you're contemplating a rich rural life producing your own food. smallholdertraining.co.uk/recommended-...

This week's farming post is about weaning (or rather NOT weaning) our calves. open.substack.com/pub/debbieki...

Yesterday I had a fortune cookie as part of my meal out. It read "You're smarter than you think you are" which got me thinking 🤣🤣🤣

My weekly ponderings on life on the farm, this time a reflection on lambing 2024 before 2025 season starts. open.substack.com/pub/debbieki...

Want to know more about smallholding before taking the plunge? Want to produce your own food? Are you a new smallholder but feel a bit out of your depth? Our popular two day course will give you a solid grounding for getting started. smallholdertraining.co.uk/introduction... #smallholding

This morning was spent at Duchy College thinking I was going to give a talk to 10 or 15 souls. There were 120 people in a lecture room. They were mostly 40+ years younger than me so hope that went well.

Pondering whether cows are something you could manage? We have a couple of places available on our Cattle for Beginners course on Saturday 1st February smallholdertraining.co.uk/cattle-for-b...

I so hate saying no to people but we've had a flurry of course bookings from people wanting to bring children from as young as 6 months to an ancient 5 years of age. We just can't do it. Not safe, not fair to other participants, the parents or the young child. Good reasons for 14+ only I'm afraid.

* The Big Snow of 2025 on the Galtees * Brothers Tom John William & their nephew Billy Cunningham along with their Hill Sheep Farming Neighbours are out on the Galtees with the last few days digging out their sheep who have been trapped in what has been the worst snow fall in decades.

My weekly murblings about the farm is now up on Substack open.substack.com/pub/debbieki...

I'm reading this at the moment; absolutely fabulous. How had I never heard of Elif Shafak?

"The current fight between the government and farmers about inheritance tax is staggeringly stupid. It is the wrong fight, with the wrong people, about the wrong issue, at the wrong time. It is terrible politics because the list of things we need from our farmers is long and growing".
