Twitter is apparently full of horrific gore footage of the Air India crash right now, per these Reddit comments. Dear op-ed writers: this is another key reason why so many of us use Bluesky now.

Here's something I post from time to time. My answer to a reader who asked me: what could journalists do NOW to break with some of their more corrosive habits.

BESSENT: We are trying to bend the curve on medical cost. And I believe that the medical expenses are out of control. TINA SMITH: But you're not controlling medical expenses by taking insurance away from people. You're just shifting the cost to hospitals and individuals and uncompensated care.

“What Senator Alex Padilla did today was political theater.” --Kristi Noem, the Head of Costuming, Hair, and Makeup at Political Theater

She is saying, in effect: "We are going to liberate the city from its democratically elected leadership using the military"

MSNBC with a great speed debunk of DHSs justifications for tackling and handcuffing Sen. Padilla. Padilla is the top Dem on the Senate Judiciary immigration subcommittee -- there's no way Noem (who meets regularly with senators on this topic) didn't know who he is.

Just so we're all clear: It's not a coincidence that the first senator they've used physical force against is Sen. Alex Padilla, a Latino man representing California.

The Head of a New RFK-Backing Group Promoted 9/11 Conspiracy Theories and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Lehrman claimed Israel is “a leading candidate for architect of the 9/11 attacks.” @annamerlan.bsky.social

This is a short doc that @knightcolumbia.org produced in 2023 about protests, the police, and the press. I wish it were less prescient. “The next time there are large-scale protests, the pieces of fabric that are holding this together may tear completely.” knightcolumbia.org/content/flas...

Would probably also behoove everyone to make sure their stories include details about what Kennedy's vaccine denialism did in the Pacific -- www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

me trying to remember that one person who I can't quite place mentally but still seems vaguely familiar

ALSO, they are NOT GOING ANYWHERE. THEY FUCKING LOVE CITIES.

This is a pretty incredible account of right wing radicalization written by a 20 year old in 1965. This was addressed to Kenneth Goff, the proprietor of a "Christian patriot" paramilitary training camp for neo-Nazis and Klansmen in Colorado. Strong "the woke mind virus made me go Nazi" vibes here.

I'm teaching a course on the American Revolution this fall, and so I've been thinking a lot about the coming 250th anniversary celebration and how it compares and contrasts with the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. For example, consider this Declaration of Economic of Independence from 1976.

dude this party is such an echo chamber. it's just friends hanging out and chilling and having a good time. you need to invite some people over who want to kill you with hammers

Now even "pro-vaccine groups" are getting the "critics said" treatment, like they're just another interest group. It wasn't that long ago that Jenny McCarthy was booted from being a C-List celebrity because of her anti-vaccine stance!

FOX: “27% support, 53% oppose” 👀 #TrumpsTrillionsTransfer

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving. There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later. They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

anyway I’m going out to protest this weekend because we haven’t been beaten yet, and I suggest you do the same it’ll make you feel better than reading an endless stream of posts about how we’re all doomed and we might as well offer ourselves up to be processed into slurry for the MAGA AI mines now

Another example of why traditional media (which adheres to long-standing journalistic standards) cannot compete w/ the right wing media sphere, which plays by completely different rules. It's a completely asymmetric playing field. The left can't compete by relying on traditional media for messaging.

truthout.org/articles/dis... #Disability activists bring wisdom from pandemic to current struggles under the regime. Alt: Masked disabled protesters on wheeled mobility devices protest carrying signs.

There's a real attentional trap that all protest movements face and have faced for a long time. If you pull off protests that are polite and civil, even if large, they will struggle to get coverage. Reporters will dismiss them as not newsworthy.

That Senators feel comfortable talking like this. Like, they don’t fear for their families or anything. I think that’s a problem with the United States. This is like the fourth time he has openly advocated for the mass murder of Americans that I’m aware of.

this is what quality, meaningful, and consequential investigative journalism looks like

I think this is probably the fairest criticism I've read and agree wholeheartedly. It also explains how people keep talking past each other in a way many takes don't.

That editor is now a senior editor at the economist. Journalism only has consequences if you punch up.

always struck by how everyone who screams “we’re full” citing the strain on services is also viciously opposed to the safety net

Time to play “who said it, David Duke or Charlie Kirk?”

If you think climate change has gotten worse during your lifetime, you're right and there's a good reason. If you're Gen X like me, more than 3/4 of fossil fuel CO₂ emissions have occurred in your lifetime. Even if you're a Millennial, it's at least half. 📊: @neilrkaye.bsky.social

David Graeber said this in 2012 about protests in New York City. Though this is increasingly what is happening this week in Los Angeles. davidgraeber.org/articles/con...

Phatic expressions are the WORST. IF you don't want to know, then PLZ don't ask: "How are you?" Viable Declarative Alternatives: "It's good to see you." "It's been a while!" "Your feelings are inconsequential to me but I wish to greet you in the customary manner." ok the last one needs some work

John Oliver doing a deep dive on Med Spas this week and how some states allow non professionals to inject botox into your face meets non scientists making and approving the stuff they're injecting into you

I still think it's pretty wild that corrupt oligarchs destroyed the entirety of U.S. consumer protection and corporate oversight and it's barely written about by journalists or policy folks just not really of any serious interest

JFK literally had multiple chronic diseases and spent a significant part of both his childhood and adult life hospitalized and convalescing. RFK Jr. is an embarrassment.
